I know its a momentous experiment but part of me thinks some of the things they want to find out about are so mysterious maybe they should remain that way, just to keep a bit of mystery in the world. Are any of the findings going to change anything? (genuine question), apart from being huge scientific discoveries (which is a huge achievement in its own right)? I know that sounds a bit dim, but will they contribute to any sort of technological development that has been waiting on the results of this?

Well they weren't expecting to get both directions running today, so they've already done more than planned.

But most of the scuttlebutt over the last week or so has been about the death threats some of the lead scientists have been getting, and some suspect packages. It seems some people really, really didn't want this to happen.

Oh there are some serious anti-LHC loons out there. I used to get updates on a number of blogs for work. Most of them were really quite funny.

There are others that I can't remember right now.

The phrase of note there is "came from" i.e. he left. The original idiotic God particle quote came from someone who chose to stay there!

I had expected somone to at least make notes on the back of a fag packet about how we're going to make warp drive and photon torpedos and stuff before they cracked the bubbly...

    Bloody sciencemongers.
