Those in and around Birmingham

Janna, 5 February, 2009 at 08:00 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 31

Is the snow as bad as they're reporting?

My H is travelling from Kent to Birmingham (and back, hopefully!) today and I was wondering what his chances of success were?

He's already left and said, "ask your internet lot, then I can decide at Euston" ?

So, please, internet lot, what do you think?

Trains are delayed into New St and International. I can't get more than 50 yards out of my road as the car won't go up the hill. That said it is supposed to get warm enough to turn the snow to sleet later but it's tipping it down at the moment.

The snow is quite thick but not as bad as it was on Monday. My OH has gone to work this morning and has got there ok. Although most of the schools are closed.

I don't think your H will have a problem getting from Kent up here and back today.

North east of Birmingham we've got sleet already but Solihull has declared a blanket closure of all schools so I assume it's reasonably bad.

I live between Birmingham and Dudley and I don't think its that bad here but I'm only going by what I can out of my window ? The local weather have just said that it will stop raining by this afternoon and turn to rain. They did show birmingham city centre on GMTV and it seemed ok.

    Okay, great thanks guys.

He's speaking at a conference so he really, really wants to get there. I suspect the audience may not feel quite as motivated though ?

There's a good 4 inches on my car, it's definitely worse than it was earlier in the week. My husband walked to work a couple of hours ago and said buses were struggling and the roads weren't clear apart from a narrow track up the middle of them. I won't be going further than the corner shop. (That's South Brum, about 4 miles from Airport.)

Motorways aren't too bad as they have been ploughed, but two accidents on M40 at Gayden and one on M6 near Corley are causing a few problems.

Side roads and some A rds haven't been gritted as local authorities are running low so its really quite bad out there.

Its the worst it has been in Dudley this week. I think all of Dudley must read hitched and felt bad about not going into work - theres more cars on the road today than for the whole of the rest of the week.

Marley, my mum's plane this morning was diverted to Stanstead and she's sat there waiting for a coach to take her up to Birmingham. Hope the snow has cleared for you!

Same here in Rugby. School closed today whereas it wasn't earlier in the week, definitely more cars on the road even though the snow is much deeper today.

I've just got home from taking the children to school and its worse than Tues when the school was closed. My oldest is home today as her school is closed for the first time this week. In places it was like an ice rink. I almost did a Todd a few times?

Roads are worse in Wolves than they were Monday & Tues. H has driven to Warwick, M5's clear but all other A/B roads are bad apparently.

I think I'm in one of the worst hit bits, south-west, and I don't think the main roads looked too bad although I wasn't driving on them. Walking is OK at the moment because the snow is so deep that it sort of gives you grip on any ice below so I only slipped once (on slush on a gritted bit of pavement!) on my long walk to work. Motorways are OK too according to MrSC, he's just worried about the roads at his end (Redditch) as it's not great and getting worse apparently.

I'm between Birmingham and Wolverhampton and the main roads are fine but the side roads/estates are a bit of a mess. H had to push a car off ours this morning and a few had just left theirs in the road.

Poor H got up at 4.30 to head down to London and got half way there to turn back an come home fed up bloke! He is fuming as he has wasted diesel money and will now have to work sunday :-( His van was loaded with 1300kgs and he said he wasn't risking it as he was slding all over the place on the Mortorway as it hadn't been cleared and there was him on his little own on there. Im glad as I was worried sick!

My project manager has just got in and I felt obliged to tell him to man up when he wanted sympathy for taking 1.5 hours to walk 3 miles.

It's not much fun here. I've ventured to the woods and it's vile on the side roads. I'm not a very good driver though ?

Just looked. The airports open again now, but with lots of knock on delays. Where are you flying in from? What times the flight due in?

I just drove 120 miles from Preston to south of bham via mways, side roads and main roads and had no issues. In fact it's the easiest drive I've ever had down the m6 to south of bham

Well he got there without any problems - unless you count a 6 minute delay on his Virgin train a problem. Out of 105 delegates, 102 are there. So all is well in Brum it would seem.

Thanks for the help you internet lot ?
