Those of you doing your own make up UPDATED pg 2

The Sock Chicken, 18 May, 2010 at 11:02 Posted on Planning 0 18

Are you buying anything different?

I wear make up everyday. I wear No.7 Protect & Perfect foundation, some eyeliner, mascara and lip gloss.

I don't want to look like I am going to work, but I can't afford to spend loads on new make up either

Any suggestions?

Im doing my own make up. I have started to google looks that I want and there are even video to show you how to do it on you tube.

Next week I going with BF to town and having some free make overs in boots and debenhams, steal their ideas, techniques and buy any products we feel will be any good. I have been saving my boots points!

I would definitely recommend a good primer to go under your foundation. It makes it last longer in my experience and I also find it means you have to use less foundation to get a flawless look. I like Laura Mercier.

I totally second a good primer. I use either Mac Prep & prime or Benefit That Gal.

I also used Eyelure false lashes and think if you can get the hang of attaching them they really help create a dramatic look.

I second this one - its great.

I would definately go along to a counter in debenhams & boots & get them to ggive you some tips to make your make up a bit more special for the day. Tell them you can't really buy much in the way of products & I'm sure they will still help you loads.

Another vote for a primer! Mac is fab and also Smashbox do a great primer.

I would go to a MAC or Benefit counter for a make up session to give you some ideas.

Ladies, quick question - do you use primer under or over your moisurizer or instead of moisurizer???

My mum bought me some for Xmas but don't know how I should use it and I'm planning on doing own make up on the day - me thinks I need to learn quickly ;-))

    xx

    I do the following

Moisturise - wait for 1 minute (often I apply my kohl pencil in this minute!)

Apply Primer - wait a few seconds

    Apply foundation

I did my own wedding makeup and did spend some money on new bits - good concealer and foundation, good eyeliner and new eyeshadow. I also paid for a makeup lesson at my local salon to have a pro help me use my new products.

Definately go and get some free make overs at the stands and be sure to say it's your wedding etc. Be prepared with a line if they start trying to sell - like 'I'll have a think about it' etc.

I've got my sister bringing round her make up bag on the day (she got married 3 weeks ago so she'll have lots of lovely stuff I can use for free!) and am going to pretty much wear a base foundation and powder so I'm not shiny, white eyeshadow on my lids and under my eyelashes, apricot eyeshadow above my eyelids and white just under the eyebrows to accentuate them, then fake eyelashes, slick of plumping lipgloss and sorted!

Thanks everyone, I was going to visit the MAC shop but was just scared of ending up spending stupid amounts of money on new make up.

I ended up doing my own make-up after having a disastrious make-up trial with a make-up artist. I am quite good at applying my own make-up and i felt that i knew my own skin type, what products suit me, more then the make-up artist.

I would highly recommend investing in a good base, foundation if your going to do your own make-up as you want it to last all day and dont want to look washed out / shiny in your photos, other then that stick with the products you like, have experience using and know suit you.

    Good luck x

The only thing i did differently was to go to a counter and get asorted for cleansing/toning/moisturising to really sort my skin out before the big day.

the clinique lady gave me a few samples to try before i bought.

    UPDATE

I went into my local Boots to stock up on my Protect and Perfect Creams, and while I was there had a chat to the No.7 lady. SHe was brilliant, and although they don't have the space for somewhere to do makeovers in there, she reccomended a mask to hydrate my skin, a colour calming cream to put under my foundation, and a light foundation, she gave samples of all these in little pots for me to try. She also recommended a good waterproof eye pencil which was Rimmel and not No.7, and a god No.7 waterproof mascara which will also lengthen my lashes. SHe also suggested good colours for eyeshadow too, Off to try out my samples, plus my new eye pencil and mascara with some eyesadow I already own, so will be having a DIY make up trial this morning! Will let you know how I get on!

THanks again for all the good advice ?

Hiya - good luck with the make up trial...i've been looking at training as a make up artist for some time and most professionals use the MAC range. I use a mix depending on what I like but maybe if your trial doesn't go to plan you could visit the MAC counter and ask them out of all the products, which are most important and worth spending a bit of money on. It'll all depend on your skin type and tone as if you have porcelain skin then the foundation won't be most important but your eye make up probably will be. Whereas if (like me) your skin is a mix of blemishes, dark circles and the type of skin that shows up everything then the foundation is soooo important, especially getting the colour right if you are doing it yourself. Good luck Smiley smile I'm still deciding whether to do mine for my wedding next year or to trust someone else?!?!? And it's in Nerja, Spain so who knows what the make up artists will be like! ha ha xx

I was thinking of visiting a MAC counter, but I just can't afford it. Instead I have opted for Boots No.7, which still isn't cheap, but I have always loved their stuff. Have now had the make up on for 1 hour and so far so good. I need to buy a new eyeshadow and lip colour, for today I have used some I already had. But the main test was using the colour calming primer and light foundation. So far I am very pleased, and even thinking of popping into town this afternoon to buy it Smiley smile
