Those of you having friends doing a reading...

BeccaO2B, 1 May, 2008 at 14:53 Posted on Planning 0 20

... are you letting them choose the text themselves or are you choosing it? I've picked out a couple of texts I like but it seems my friend has already decided what she wants to read! What's everyone else doing?

I decided what they would read - although my friends did make some suggestions, I made the final decision.

When i asked each friend to read, i gave them the text i'd like them to read.
I put a lot of thought into who to pick, and what would be appropriate for them to read.

so if they wanted to read something else i'd definitely have a look and see if i liked it.. otherwise i'd just say please could you read the one i picked.

do you like the reading your friend is suggesting?

I'm having friends doing a reading, and although we've not chosen yet it will be our choice what they read. Obviously if for some reason they object to this, we'll consider their views, or if they have something they like we'll consider that too, but at the end of the day i'm being a bit selfish bride about it [:I]

They might have some nice ideas you haven't come up with?

When we asked my MIL2B to do a reading during our ceremony, we said to her, 'we really like this one but if you have any suggestions let us know', she read it and started ? so we took it she liked our choice!

I think it was the realisation that her youngest son was getting married that did it as much as anything! But she's reading this one for us:

    On Your Wedding Day
    Author Unknown

Today is a day you will always remember
    The greatest in anyone's life
You'll start off the day just two people in love
And end it as Husband and Wife

It's a brand new beginning the start of a journey
With moments to cherish and treasure
And although there'll be times when you both disagree
These will surely be outweighed by pleasure

You'll have heard many words of advice in the past
When the secrets of marriage were spoken
But you know that the answers lie hidden inside
Where the bond of true love lies unbroken

So live happy forever as lovers and friends
It's the dawn of a new life for you
As you stand there together with love in your eyes
From the moment you whisper 'I do'

And with luck, all your hopes, and your dreams can be real
May success find it's way to your hearts
Tomorrow can bring you the greatest of joys
But today is the day it all starts.

we had this reading at our wedding, Mr WTs friend read it and everyone went 'Awwwww' when he finished reading it!

My Godmother read Captain Corellis Mandolin, which I love and that brought a few tears to eyes too!

We've picked our own readings but said to the readers that if they have any suggests they are more than welcome. Both were happy with us choosing them though.

I've mentioned it to my friend who is also being our sons godmother on the day (as we are having him christened straight after our ceremony) and asked her to think about a suitable reading that relates to family rather than marriage specifically. She's a teacher so I figured she may have more ideas than me too!

I also want to have a more traditional wedding reading so will probably suggest a couple to whoever we pick for that reading and let them make the final choice.

I've picked something for my friend to read. Shes really busy as she is a Councillor and a primary school teacher so wouldn't have the time to find a suitable poem for us.

My h2b and I choose the reading we want my friend to read and she is practising every day, so she can recite it without checking the words!

Ah bless..... so far she has mastered the first and second verse! ?

I've just returned from my friends wedding rehearsal and i'm reading the very poem thats been posted! She chose it after looking at many.
I only had to read the first and last verse for the sake of the rehearsal. The minister said that would be enough in order to hear me and check my volume, everyone fell about laffin at this as i'm an ex-actress now school teacher lololol... however, the piece of A4 paper isnt reallllly glam enuff and I've to hold it as there is no lectern. Have to think of a means of presenting it neatly - not trusting myself to learn my lines off by heart!!

When I read at my friends wedding I printed my reading out on a piece of card and because she had a celtic theme, I printed a celtic rune on the other side in the same style as the ones at the wedding. I also printed it really big because normally I wear reading glasses! I'm going to do that for our wedding too!

Wellll funnily enough I bought a lovely Wedding congrats card on my way home and will paste the poem inside and then pass back to her later in the day. As you suggest, theres summin on the back for the congregation to look at and they get a keepsake!

We chose them for our friends and they were fine with that. Again, never occured to me to get them to choose.
Just a word of learning that we had - one of them didn't have a copy on the day (had assumed we provided it!) and due to a broken printer, my sister had to copy it by hand from my laptop with 1/2 hour to go!
