As one comment said, if you put out enough names you are going to get a few correct.

This wasn't the discussion that I was really expecting - however everyone has their own opinions I just wanted to ask people who had been if they went to someone that was reccomended or if it was ok to go to anyone not a debate on wether it is crap or not

Can I ask why you want to see one and what you hope to get out of it?

A load of nonsense if you want my two cents' worth.

Surely the advertisements of those who advertise is enough to scare you off....

Sorry to be blunt but with the number of posts you've got I'd be really surprised to hear that you've missed the reaction to this sort of post - the most recent was only a couple of weeks ago. It is always a can of worms topic.

Our local pub had a 'readings' night last month. Everything i was told was all just general stuff that could happen in anyones life.

It was the quickest waste of £15 ive ever experienced. Wished i'd had spent the money on cider!

Have you tried www.friendreunited.com? facebook? Seriously, anyone who says they can talk to the dead is bullshitting you and exploiting your loss. Do not go there.

I can totally appreciate that you might want to do this - who wouldn't like to have contact with people they have lost. However, it isn't possible and maybe, if it is something you are yearning for strongly, you need to do something to come to terms with your loss - I would suggest some therapy is the way to go rather than have some charlatan exploiting you

I was given a recommendation, it was not something I went and searched for, someone gave me her name and number through work and she was amazing. I will admint some of the things she said was very general but there was one thing is particular she got spot on. I had been experiencing pain in a part of my body and I had raised my worries only with my mum and my h2b, no one else and she knew.

I would not phone some premium rate line I had found in the newspaper.

I'll leave that answer to the people who can tell you how it works. Even Derren Brown has come out and said it's all a big con.

I think the term is cold reading.

I saw a medium / tarot reader recently. She told me she was excellent, I told her I didn't 'believe'. Apparently she can connect with children and tell parents what they need to do in order to fully meet their child's emotional needs. She wanted me to write an article; I told her I was sceptical. She told me to go along for free and she'd prove it to me.

    Things she said to me:

    • your husband isn't pulling his weight around the home (not true, but probably true for 99% of women)
    • that I would be successful (define success)
    • that I would have another baby, unless I took precautions (<belm>Smiley winking
    • that I would move house at some point in the future, but it'd take longer than I think
    • that serious money is on it's way (would be nice, but hard to prove or disprove)
    • that I am stressed and need to slow down
    • beware of what you wish for, everything is possible for me
    • that I have a stressful relationship with a certain part of my family (how many people does this apply to?)

so, stunningly specific then ?. The rest guesswork (she knows I run my own business, and I have children, who isn't stressed, busy or ambitious)

    I didn't write the article ?

Hope, Lois is spot on with everything she said.

If I was to give you a reading about yourself and your personality, it would be

"You have a need for other people to like and admire you, and yet you tend to be critical of yourself. While you have some personality weaknesses you are generally able to compensate for them. You have considerable unused capacity that you have not turned to your advantage. At times you have serious doubts whether you have made the right decision or done the right thing"

paragraphs like the one above apply to pretty much everyone, and this is how mediums work. they use generic information which YOU apply to yourself, thus making the reading personal.

If someone could prove outright that they could talk to the dead then I would have to believe, but until then I'll carry on saying it's a load of bollox.

Why would my dead friends/family only talk to someone if I'd paid them?

Clairy, I did a similar article a few years ago - I saw five different mediums, all of whom worked in different ways (palm reading, stones, cards, one even did coffee grounds!) and they were all blatantly charlatans. What I did say in my article though, was that having someone talk to you, about you for 55 minutes is pretty therapeutic ?

If you really truly believe this stuff Hope, then I would recommend that you read "Attack of the Unsinkable Rubber Ducks" by Chris Brookmyre, as it debunks a lot of the myths in a very funny way. Mediums (media?!) only make their money by exploiting vulnerable people like you, and I don't think that it would help actually deal with your loss.
