Those of you with young children...

sarahv75, 8 February, 2010 at 16:42 Posted on Planning 0 4

What is happening with the children in the evening? We've got 2 boys who'll be 13 months old and 3 years old when we get married and we're not really sure what to do with them in the evening. At the moment we've just asked my mum to take them home when it looks like they really need their beds - i'm assuming it'll be around 9pm or maybe 10pm, but I can tell she would love to stay until the end of the reception, although she's more than happy to look after them and not drink. Anyone we trust enough to babysit would be invited to the wedding so there just isn't anyone else really! Apart from H2B's parents obviously but our boys know my mum better.

My 3 year old has stayed up til 10pm before and he was fine actually, so it's just my baby that i'm worried about. Don't know how he'll sleep in the buggy with all the noise (didn't sleep that well at a wedding we went to when he was 5 months old)! It's also a shame my mum won't be able to drink as she'll be driving them home (we only live 10-15 mins drive from the venue).

What type of venue is it? Does it have hotel rooms so your mum could stay over with the children?

Does your room have a quieter end (if you know what I mean...away from the dj!) that you could have the babies pram? To be honest they will probably be fussed over and cuddled! Sorry I am not any help! x

    Hiya Sarah,

I am in the same position as you, my son will be about 22mths, and the agreement is that my sister will leave early with him about 9pm/10pm etc when he starts to get a bit ratty.

Like you closest friends would be at the party and he wont be of an age where I feel comfortable with a babysitter iykwim...

What about getting her a lovely bottle of wine or a gift voucher as a thank you?

Whatever happens our weddings will be that more special with the -littlen-s -there

P.s just had another thought... if your child is a good sleeper what about putting him down to bed in the room upstairs and having the baby monitor on, and having your Mum carry the talkie so if he does wake/get disturbed at least she can go up and check,,,

    xxx

I've always been amazed at how well littlies cope at weddings - does the hotel have rooms and a baby sitting service? your mum could be on standby to go and settle them if they wake but could still enjoy the party? Otherwise I'd be tempted to just bring a buggy and hope they sleep - even if it was just for an hour after the meal it might be enough for them to last the evening.

It's a shame for your mum to miss out on her girl's big day/night ?

My daughter will be just over 2 when we get married and my nephew will be nearly 3. We will be staying over at the venue but i think they will sleep in pushchairs till my sister decides to go to bed (sis & bro-in-law will be having my daughter in their room) where they will both sleep in travel cots.

It always amazes me how kids sleep in busy noisy atmospheres but generally they do.

Sorry if this isn't much help.

The venue doesn't have any hotel rooms unfortunately, but we're staying at a hotel next door so it's possible we could book a room for my mum there, put the boys to bed at 9 or 10pm (in a travel cot and a Roary the racing car blow up bed!) and then ask our parents to take it in turns to sit outside the room. Though it might be a bit of a palaver! My mum would just have to be careful not to wake them when she went to bed, but at least she'd be there until the end!
