Those who have a theme for their Christmas decorations

Do you change it every year? And does that mean you buy new decorations every year?

My theme is whatever the colours are in my living room. When I decorated last year, I had to buy all new decs for the tree as well.

In previous years, I tended to just change one of the colours or update a few of the decs. I like my tree to look different every year which as you can imagine, gets rather expensive. Its lovely though and quite often the MIL ends up with all my older decs for her tree so they don't get wasted.

No, it would be far too expensive to do this. My theme for years has been predominantly gold and white/crystal throughout the house and we have added to our collection of decorations over the years so I wouldn't want to ditch them all and start again. I think if you wanted to change a theme you could add another colour that would involve only buying a few new decorations ie I could add brown or blue to mine to make it different but would still use the gold decs in the main.

I've got lots of different colours of christmas decorations, built up over the years. Each year I decide a colour scheme and see what I've already got in those colours Then I add a few nice new things/replace some of the old tatty stuff in those colours.

There's not too much stuff. In the lounge we decorate the tree, hang tinsel/garlands over pictures and the mantelpiece, and have tealight holders and candles strewn across the hearth (no kids). In the dining room I just do the table. That's it.

Our living room tree is decorated in old fashioned traditional stuff, bells, gingham hearts, candy canes, red bows that kind of stuff (its taken about 6 years to collect all the stuff together year by year)

Dining room has a cream coloured tree and I alternate the decs on that every year, this year its browns, copper and gold, last year it was baby pink and blue.

The brown/ gold combo was all bought in January this year in the sales dirt cheap, as was the blue and pink stuff the year before. I won't pay full price for christmas decs, they're always bought in the sales!

This is what I thought which is why I wondered if I was missing something?

Our decs are all gold and I just buy a few new ones each year.

We only have silver/blue decorations but they don't all match and weren't bought at the same time. It's because we have such a teeny tiny artificial tree which IMO would look shite with a load of different colours on. The ILs and my parents have space for lovely big real trees and the family collection of everything of all colours looks brilliant.

Mine is the same every year - white, clear and silver. I try to add colours but I just can't do it. ?

I always buy some new decorations each year so have a huge collection but don't use them all.

I also always buy new lights every year. I think I've got about 1,000 to put on the tree this year.

No i have the same theme every year, which kind of matches in with the colour of my lounge. I think that the balls on my tree are cream and gold. We have a brown and cream lounge

We bought our first tree last year and kitted it out with all the decorations in one go - mint green and hot pink, I think, with lots of silver and some black. It was expensive but we don't plan to change them for ages.

Buying new decorations in the sales is a good idea - I would never think of that!

The only downside to buying decs in the sales is that you have a long wait to see what they actually look like in situ the christmas after!

We get a real tree and for the past three year have had silver decorations (mirror balls, glass and silver beads). I've built up that collection.
This year i've added red and white decorations to that.

This is our fourth Christmas together so i've also built up quite a collection of other decorations which go around the house ( decorate the kitchen, hall and living room as those are the rooms we all hang out in when we have parties at Christmas).

I definitely do something new each year, but like to drag out some old favourites too.

Mine is decorated to match the room, so if we redecorate the house then I'll need new decorations.

In the hall we have a real tree with chocolate, silver & red. Upstairs in the sitting room we have burgundy & gold.

Last year, I couldn't find the box with all our baubles in it so I bought some cheap (but pretty good looking) decorations in silver and blues. It looked good with the lights, but Mr GMTprefers a mix of colours, so we're hoping we can find the original decs in the next few days. We have our tree (always a real one) in the kitchen as it's where we spend most of our time, and with black surfcaes, beech-coloured cabinets and silver handles, along with buttermilk walls, pretty much any colour scheme looks good. We like lots of candles too, so have them all over our long antique pine table.

We don't have a traditional tree our is a twig! We rescued some branches from a tree that had blown down in a storm some years ago and have sprayed it silver.

When we go on holiday we always buy little trinkets that we can use to decorate our twig - it's great every December to get the stuff out and get all nostalgic about the holidays we've had together over the years.

I actually hate Christmas (sorry) but have found that this is a nice way to build our own set of traditions to ensure that my H gets to celebrate Christmas but it's done in a way that I feel comfortable with - if that makes sense.

My mums best friend has a twig too! Well it was a real christmas tree she had years ago that she left out in the garden after christmas and all the needles fell off. She decided it looked quite nice (minimalist!) and spay painted it white. She now brings it out every christmas and decorates it with black and pink baubles!

It appears we'll be having a pink and silver theme, with a bit of purple thrown in. I allowed the girl child to help me pick some new decorations and that's what she chose.

Truly tweeness is in the heart of all 7 year old girls.

MIL buys new decorations for her whole house every year without fail to go with whatever colour her living room is so we always use her old ones the year after. This year we have cream and gold, next years is looking like it's going to be blue and silver!
