Three Weeks To Go! - UPDATE

whiteroserachel, 18 February, 2011 at 13:54 Posted on Planning 0 5

As the title suggests (!), just three weeks to go until my wedding. Feels like preparations have really slowed down over the past couple of weeks after the flurry of activity in January, although have just paid off the balance of the venue today (take deep breaths and think of the lovely credit card points) and went for first dress fitting yesterday.

Speaking of dress fitting: when I bought my dress I told the shop owner I was planning to try and lose two stone and she said that would be fine, the dress could be taken in without any problems. Anyway, after working so hard to achieve that weight loss she now says that even with alterations my dress is going to probably still be too big (because of the boning they can't take more then 1.5in from each side) and I'm really quite disappointed about it. Even from a distance you can tell from the bust and ruching at the waist that it's not quite right, plus one of the things I liked about this dress was the way it pulled everything in and now it just doesn't do that. (I know I've got less to pull in now than 6 months ago but I could still use all the help I can get!) It wasn't exactly a cheap dress either and I'm starting to wish that I'd left it a bit longer to buy something (there were a lot of sale dresses in other shops that I was less than 3in away from getting into!) but it's too late now. To be honest I think she just said it would be fine at the time because she didn't think I'd manage it! So, pretty fed up about that. UPDATE: went for my follow-up fitting today and they've managed to take it in an extra half inch from where it was pinned at the previous fitting, and it's looking much, much better. They've also added an extra pleat at the front so that the extra fabric isn't so obvious, which I thought was a clever way of getting around it. It's still not quite as perfect as it was when I first bought it, but I do feel like I'll look lovely in it on the day so that's a huge weight off my mind with nine days to go!

On a completely random other note, it was H2B's birthday last week and one of his presents was a USB microscope. I made the mistake earlier of looking at my engagement ring under it and now I need to add "get ring polished" to my wedding to-do list!

Sounds to me like you need to take a few deep breaths, relax, and try to enjoy the last few weeks ?

You're probably right about the dress shop woman not thinking you'd lose the weight but now's not the time to get angry. Make sure that they make it the very best fit possible and then stop worrying. Nobody will notice if one tiny piece of ruching is off centre or something.

Awww, you poor thing. I've also order my dress with a long time to go and told the woman I was going to drop a dress size and she said fine - I guess I'll find out at Christmas. I totally understand why you're upset. For many brides, and certainly for me, the dress is the most important aspect of the day (apart from marrying the person you love, of course - silly me, how could I forget about the Groom ?)

I would get in touch with her and make sure that she is aware that you are not happy with this service. Did she write a note on your order form at all? As I ordered a dress just an inch or two too small for me and so she wrote 'will lose weight' on my order form - just curious as this would prove that she said it would be ok. I think at least you deserve an apology. On a different note, is it a lace up, as I've heard that these fit a huge range of sizes when laced up correctly?

In the meantime, sit back and relax, have a bath, glass of wine, chill - and have a hug! ?

    Thanks ?

Yes its a lace-up but unfortunately that doesn't help as the fitting yesterday was with it tied as tight as it'll go. When I bought it, it was laced up to its largest size which was why I thought there would be loads of leeway to lose the weight, but apparently not as much as I needed!

And no, she never wrote anything on the receipt about me losing weight but it never occurred to me at the time that I might need her to. To be honest the service hasn't been particularly good in general since I paid up so I'm not holding my breath on her going out of her way to sort it out or even say sorry for selling me something that wasn't going to be appropriate based on the information I gave her at the time.

I think what's upsetting me most of all is that I went quite a bit over budget on this dress because I thought it was "the one" and now it's just baggy and unflattering and not nearly as nice as some others that I saw for half the price that would have fitted me by now! Maybe I should just eat pie and chips for the next few weeks, see if I can't fill it out again. ?

    ha ha, why not!

In all seriousness though, I can see what you mean. You fell in love with it because of how perfect it looked on you, as a result you spent more than intended, and now that you've lost the weight and should be able to have the photos you dreamed of the dress doesn't compliment your figure the way it should. It really is heartbreaking, I would be so upset. I think you should definitely get in touch with her though and explain this; at least if she is unhelpful you will always know that you done everything you could. Plus, you can warn everyone you know never to use her if it's any consilation... x

Trust me, I made my feelings pretty clear yesterday but she just doesn't seem to care that I'm not happy with it, which is ironic given how most of their advertising is around what a personal and friendly service it is.

That's very true! She appears on quite a few supplier websites so I can always vent my frustration with negative reviews if she doesn't get her act together before the wedding!
