Time between getting engaged and planning wedding / getting married

helenparki, 17 January, 2012 at 11:53 Posted on Planning 0 36

I’m just being nosey after reading the census on everyone’s weddings (mainly how big some people’s budgets are!) So I was wondering, how soon after you got engaged did you start planning and booking your wedding?

We got engaged just over 2 years ago. We didn’t have any plans to get married as we had no money. So we were engaged for a while then my mum asked “when are you going to get married?!” So we sat down, talked, worked out how much we could save as we still at this point had no savings then booked it.

We’ve paid for things on a monthly basis, saving where we can, which is why our budget is quite low. I’d love to have unlimited funds but no chance! My mum is very kindly paying for a lot so I think without her, we’d be nowhere nearer to getting married.

Anyone else the same as me?

We did the same. But obviously, the amount of money you're able to put aside for wedding stuff depends on a whole heap of other financial cirucmstances. Some people can afford to put away £100 a month, some may not miss £1k a month. The size of a budget is entirely relative (and says nothing about how "good" a wedding might be!).

We got engaged in April 2011, started looking at venues a few weeks later and booked one by the end of May, almost 2 years to the day before we get married (31st May 2013)

We are very lucky in that my parents have given a rough budget, but havent wanted to be involved too much as really want decisions to be made by OH and myself. Dad just asks to see the budget now and again (not that its been changing much since the initial venue plans were sorted) But I expect to make more decisions over the next few months, and will try and get my parents involved more, as i think they deserve some input. I am their only daughter afterall, so I don't want them to feel left out

We got engaged March 2007 and will marry August this year, so 5 years and 5 months in between. However, we were still living at opposite ends of the country when we got engaged so our priority was to save for a house and buy that first, which we did in April 2010. The wedding is being funded with the leftover savings from the house deposit plus whatever new money we manage to save, so we've only really started booking and organising stuff over the last 2-3 years.

We had 14 months from engagement to marriage. Partly because we saw engagement purely as a transition from 'single' to 'married' so didn't want to hang around in limbo and partly because we had the luxury of being able to pay for things from savings.

Think its about 10 months between engagement and wedding date. Without help from parents though we may have had to wait longer. Been together eight years though so didnt want to wait much longer ?

12 months. Originally we were going to wait a few years and save money. OH sat for a whole afternoon comparing venue prices out of curiosity. He then decided he wanted to do it right away. Luckily my parents have been quite generous, which meant we didn't need to save so much after all.

My H2B and I had known we wanted to get married for a few years but I'd always said I didn't see the point in an official engagement until we could afford to plan the wedding etc as we're saving up for a mortgage. Then he surprised me on holiday on 10th August 2011 and we both agreed a mortgage could wait and we should just get married. I went to a wedding fair within a few weeks to get an idea of costs etc and we set our date for 29th December 2012. We're being careful with our budget and doing well with our savings targets but if money was no object we would be getting married sooner.

We got engaged September 25th 2011 and are getting married September 21st 2012. We visited our first venue a week after getting engaged and I bought my dress a couple of weeks after that. I waited 8 years for the proposal though so it was already planned in my head!

I will have been engaged for 3 years come this summer and we have only just started planning for the wedding. We got engaged pretty quickly after becoming a couple (had known each other years previously) and spent our time and money since on getting a mortgage and doing our house up.

I guess it is all down to each indvidual couple and what your situations are and what you deem more important. We have a lot of friends/family asking about when it is going to be as it has been years since the engagment party.

I am in the complete same boat as you! ? When are you aiming to get married?

We got engaged on the night of Tuesday 7th September 2010, and went to look at the venue on the Sunday. They didn't have the date available that we wanted (Saturday 17th September 2011) so we left, had a think about it, and phoned them later that day and booked Saturday 12th May 2012...it just kinda snowballed from then on! ?

We got engaged in November, getting married on 5th May. Less than 6 months altogether.

We have been together 7 years and have a 2 year old Son so I've had plenty of time to think about what I want! Venue and Church booked before Christmas, everything else organised already. It's not that hard if you know what you want!

It also helped than my OH got some redundancy money and my parents are giving us some. Still, we are doing the whole thing for £8k.

We got engaged in December I want to get married in October so 10 months - I have been planning in my head since childhood so I always said once engaged I was planning. I might have waited till May but a friend is getting married around then and so October fitted in with the months I wanted.

We got engaged in March 2010, although we'd discussed it for a while beforehand and had even chosen a venue, which we booked in June 2010, for an August 2012 wedding.

We're very lucky in that both sets of parents are contributing a generous amount. Having had siblings get married before us, it had been made clear to us how much would be available. We also have a reasonable amount of disposable income. We've paid for all small things (say, up to £1,000) and parents have paid for the reception and our flights (we're getting married in Australia). We also had a bit of compensation after our original venue cancelled our booking, which helped a lot!

We have just under 6 months between getting engaged and our wedding. I got engaged towards the end of Sep 2011 and we are getting married March 11th 2012. I am all booked and pretty organised and I'm glad we've done it this way and not taken ages to plan it. We have been lucky in that my OH has a lot of savings so we are taking it out of that and will put it all back afterwards and also both our parents have helped a little too.

We got engaged in June 2009, started planning in Feb 2011 and are getting married in June 2012. So three years in total.

Would have loved to get married sooner but with no savings & a mortgage to pay it's taken us awhile to save the money. Hopefully it will all be worth it!

We will have been engaged just shy of 2 years when we get married, neather of us has parents so we are funding it all ourselfs, luckly my h2b has a good job so we are able to save quite a bit a month, although it is hard! We dont want to use credit cards or loans as we dont want to wait too long after the wedding for a baby (he'll be 37 when we wed) we were engaged for 3 months before we started looking for venues, it didn't take us long and we knew we wanted our local church. everything else were going to leave till the 12 month countdown so we will have a bit of a break from all the planning!

My OH knew not to propose until he/we were ready to start planning. So we will have had a year between getting engaged and when our wedding.

But that's just us. Probably quite speedy compared to some!

I don't get this at all and never have...you get engaged to be married. If you have no plans to get married, you're not engaged surely?

There will be 10 months between engagement and wedding for us.

We got engaged on Christmas day 2010 and got married 23rd Dec 2011, so just shy of a year. We started planning almost straight away. We didn't want to get engaged unless we could afford the wedding at the time and were fortunate enough to have enough savings to cover it.

Don't think about other people's budgets. One of the most amazing weddings I have had the pleasure of being a guest at cost a fraction of the average wedding budget and it was great.

We got engaged at New Year 2010/11 and we're getting married this September so 21 months engaged. Wow didn't realise it was that long! Coming around quick though!!

We've been together 5 and a half years so had ideas of what we wanted.

Booked our venue after 2 months and I ordered my dress 3 months into our engagement.

I wouldn't advise rushing into booking things though as ideas change so much throughout the planning. If we'd have married in six months many things would be different to what we're having now. I think a year and a half gives us enough time to really think what we want.

    In your opinion.

Like I said on this thread I was engaged for 10 years. My OH proposed to me in 2000 when we were 18 and I was pregnant. There was no way I being a teenage bride so we saved our arses off to buy a house which we did in 2005 and it then took us a further 4 years (until we were financially stable) in 2009 before we booked our wedding for 2010.

It was all about priorities for me; buying a house was more important.

We got engaged 3rd February 2010 and we're getting married 24th May 2013, so it will be 3 years for us. Money and housing was always an object for us but we live together now and save up for our low budget wedding. Like HayleyMay said, having a long engagement can be useful. We nearly got married at an approved venue this coming August but it was pushing our wedding budget to in excess of £7,000- not something we can afford! Instead, we're having a registry office wedding followed by a Humanist blessing (originally on Perranporth beach but that's changed again) which has slashed the original budget by half. A friend of mine is having an approved venue with a budget of £2k. How some people can spend so much money amazes me!

We got engaged on 4th September 2011 and are getting married beginning of May 2013 so about 18 months in total. We would have loved to get married this year but I wanted a spring/summer wedding and we already have quite a few weddings to go to there some close family and friends and didn't want to squeeze ours in, we wanted everyone to look forward to it. Also, we want to have an amazing honeymoon so having that bit longer gives us more time to save to do what we want. Plus we haven't found a venue yet!
