Time of day question

nofavours, 12 February, 2009 at 22:25 Posted on Planning 0 7

Hi

My wedding is on the 24th Oct this year. When I spoke to the registry office I said that I'd like 3pm as the time for the ceremony, just off the top of my head really, and it seemed to tie in with other weddings I've been to. The clocks change in the early hours that weekend, so it's just before the days get much shorter. As the venue has lovely gardens, it would be a shame if (and it's a big IF) the weather is nice and don't get chance to see them. I know ceremonies are pretty short but I was just thinking if it starts to get dark around 4ish then we wouldn't have much time to appreciate the full glory. I'm thinking of maybe starting a bit earlier, but a bit concerned about making people hang around. Does anyone know when it starts to get dark in late October? I'm really struggling to remember what summer is like!

Thank you

N

    Hi!

I think by that stage, just coming up to the clocks changing you should get a couple of hours ie. until maybe 5pm, where it's light enough to walk around etc. What about even moving it 30mins earlier? - I doubt that'll make too much difference to your guests but could make all the difference with the light!

    HTH?

I got married on 31 October and it was dark by 4:30pm. I'd move your ceremony to 2pm if possible which will allow for you to be a little late, the ceremony to over-run etc. That means you'll have lots of time for pictures outside. I had pictures outside as it wasn't raining, it was bloody cold though!

I've found this website really useful when I've been stressing about my wedding, it shows you what sunrise/sunset times will be on a certain date.

I thought I might have a similar problem because I'm getting married in 3 weeks, and it's another couple of weeks after the wedding until the clocks go forward, and we're getting married at 4pm/

Hi - I'm getting married on 2nd October and I've arranged our ceremony for 1:30pm. This was mainly because our venue suggested it as an ideal time to ensure everything ran smoothly and, not knowing really what time to go for, we went with what they suggested.

I've been planning on having candles in the reception room so that when the light does start fading we'll have a lovely cosy atmosphere.

FML - thanks for the link, it's rather interesting!

    Hi

I'm getting married on 1st November and our ceremony is at half two, the earliest they can do. I think that should be enough time for daylight photos. Then again dusk may look quite nice for some?

Where are you getting married? I'm Scotland and the further north you are the lighter it will be later...I think there is about 40minutes of a difference between sunset in Glasgow vs. London.

I got married on November 1st last year in Scotland! The lighting was fine til about 4pm We had some photos on a balcony at about 4pm and they were lovely. We had a cracking day though not a cloud in the sky until around 3. If you're down south I don't think you will have any probs.

    MrsMcB2B - where are you?

Thanks for your responses, particularly the link about when the sun comes up/goes down, on which I managed to spend quite a lot of work time clicking about! I think I'll bring it forward an hour (i.e. to 2pm, not sure if that is forward or back). I'm getting married in Nottingham, so it will be a little lighter than London, but less so than Scotland. I agree about the dusk lighting - I've noticed that in autumn you do get some stunning sunsets. It's kind of annoying how I decided on autumn to avoid obsessing about whether the weather will be nice, but that has already happened!
