To make or buy? That is the question...

neo_kat26, 17 July, 2013 at 21:20 Posted on Planning 0 22

I'm really torn.. I love a wedding invitation I have seen online and I'm torn as to whether to buy them or make them myself. I could make them (probably not perfect but very similar) but by the time I buy all the materials and spend ages making them it may be not much more to buy them ready made and save myself the stress. I know making them is lovely etc but I don't think anything would really notice if they were made by me or someone else to be honest.

The materials if I made them myself would probably come to about £300.00 and if I buy them ready made it would come to around £400.00...... rough estimate!

I am making all my own, but I am very much into papercrafts, so already do scrap-booking and card-making

I wont save money making them, but I will enjoy that I made them, designed them, and have exactly what I want

If you haven't done it before, can you get a small quantity for what you need to see if you can get the desired look you want? that way you can see if you like them, and want to make them, as they may take longer than you plan on?

I think it's what would you rather do - save yourself money and do them yourself, or - save yourself time and order them.
For me if I thought I was going to save at least £100 and they were going to be anywhere near as nice i'd just make them myself, but only cause i'm trying to budget myself lol.
If you can't be bothered making them all and have the money to spare you could just order.

Well they are £4.50 each and £1.00 to add RSVPs. I would need around 70.

Remember that you don't need one per person as a lot of people will be in couples / families

I really wanted to make mine, but then I looked at the cost of buying the card, ink for my printer, sparkly bits, ribbon, glue etc and it didn't seem worth it. I found some that I loved from a printers shop and got a reasonable deal with them. If its a similar cost save yourself the hassle Smiley winking

I made my save the saves and will be making my invites. I saw a design on not on the high street and copied that. Materials for both have come in at £75. I really enjoyed making my save the dates as so many people have commented on them, and I am looking forward to starting my invites soon too! The invites are slightly more simple so hopefully the novelty won't wear off.

Ha! This is the mistake I made initially when costing up invitations...what an eejit I am!

Turned out I only needed 25 in total, which meant I could splurge a bit. Think the whole lot cost £80 from Etsy.com. And they are super classy and a million times better than anything I could have made mysefl! But that's because I don't have a) a crafty bone in my body or b) the time / inclination to make my own.

I made all of mine for £20 + envelopes and I have 90 guests for the day and an extra 60 for the evening (so about 45 day invites and 30 evening)

What on EARTH is on the invitations that would bring the cost of making them up to £300?!!

Now - I'm usually all for DIY because it is original, personal and cheaper BUT stationery can be a tricky thing to get right, and more often than not I see home made invitations that don't look as great as they could be. For the sake of £100 difference, I think it would be worth getting them done professionally. Making stationery can be very time consuming, even if the design is simple. Unless that £100 would make a significant difference to your budget and mean scrimping else where, then I would have them made for you. Divide up £100 by the number of hours you think it will take to make the invitations (probably longer than you think) and this is what you'd be 'paying' yourself an hour to make them - it may not be worth it in the end!

I'm making my own because I make cards as a hobby so know what I'm doing, and already have a lot of the kit required. The ones I've seen that I'm basing my design on are £6.00 each!

Do you have a flash - I may be able give advice about how easy they would be for you to make yourself?

My friend is making hers (50 of them) and hating every second. In the last week she's ccalled me about 10 times having break downs about it! So I am DEFINITELY going to buy mine. I joked about her making mine as well and she was very unimpressed!

Also you say about it being about £100 difference but you have to think how much time you will save by buying them. My friend has spent every evening for about a week doing hers, she has also gone through 4 ink cartridges which are expensive and she's really stressy. She hasn't even put them together yet, she has just finished desiging and printing them all out!

I made my daughters invitations.... never again!

Until you start, you don't realise how time consuming it is. It took me nearly 3 hours... 3 HOURS... to make the first one. We did get a little quicker after that and had a production line with my partner, daughter and son in law..... but it still took hours to knock up 40.

I take my hat off to all the wedding stationary suppliers on here.... you deserve a medal.
