Morning all,

Firstly sorry if I am posting in the wrong place.

Secondly, thanks very much for all the info' so far. This is my first post but have already read through a lot of your posts to get a few ideas.

Anyway, here is my plan:-

I'm going to ask my girlfriend of nearly 4 1/2 years to marry me soon. I always had this plan in my head of going to Rome to propose but it will not work out this way. At the moment I am in touch with ring maker and the plan for proposing is to hit a nice hotel in Newcastle at New Year that looks over the waterfront. Get a nice suite and attend their New Year bash, dinner/dance type thing. I'll then sneak off upstairs, get some flowers, champagne and wait on my other half coming upstairs to see where I've gotta to before popping the question.

So ladies (and gents), how does this sound? Romantic enough? Obviously I want my soon to be fiance to remember the proposal and wedding forever.

Cheers and any questions/comments please let me know.

Craig

Sounds very romantic, but like Moya said you do need to make sure she comes to you rather than waiting downstairs and getting annoyed at how long you're taking lol!!!! It would definately be something I would remember ?

Very nice! Let the hotel know your plans, they may be able to help out. My OH arranged with the restaurant to bring me flowers and champagne, you may even get a nicer room if you tell them! Make sure you feed the girl first! My OH did it before the meal and i couldnt eat.. add a lot of champagne and excitement and i got drunk very quick! Finally, don't worry if it doesn't go to plan, the end result will be the same (hopefully!). Make sure your phone is full of battery as she will call the whole world! Have a great time! x

Ooh that sounds lovely, what i would say is dont try too hard that it then becomes re-hearsed as she may then suspect something!

Try getting the hotel staff on side and help you and maybe if you think she would take a while to come looking for you, you could get one of the members of staff to ask after you as they have a querie with your booking and need to speak to you and that they have tried the room phone (presuming it has one) but no answer, does she know where you are? .................................................................... and the rest would then be down to you.

    Good -luck ?

Good idea about getting the hotel involved Lorna, I LIKE IT! ?

Trying to choose a ring at the moment, NOT easy! My other half loves yellow stones so going to get a diamond treated to a nice canary yellow via a well known UK based ring maker. Going to spend around £3-4k, is this alright or not enough? I'm obviously new to this as it's the first and last time I'll propose, just looking for some much needed help!! Have it down to fives designs also, just a case of picking the one I suppose...

I would say that's more that enough!!lol I know that my ring is valued at £1500 for insurance but OH told me he paid just over half that and I love it! ?

If you need any more help with anything just ask! Oh and let us know how it goes ?

How much you spend on the ring is not really the priority, so long as its something you have chosen for her because you think she will like it and it resembles the thought you have put into planning all of this and the way you feel about her is what matters, us girls do like a nice sparkly though!! maybe putting some thought into the types of wedding rings you are likely to be looking at may also help sway your descision.

OMG she is sooooo lucky i really hope it all goes to plan, we will all be 'watching this space!'

A little spanner in the works as such. My bride-to-be's parents are currently staying at the hotel I'm planning to propose at at New Year. Anyway, they mentioned to my other half that they might head back at NY, I'm like NO!!! Sent her Dad a text saying I need to speak to hime when he is back, tomorrow. Is it too early to ask him if I can marry his daughter or can you ask anytime?

    Cheers

Which hotel are you planning to stay in? For some reason when I read this post I immediately thought you were talking at the Hilton - if so, how about staying at Malmaison? Or vice-versa??

Not sure what the "rules" are about asking the permission (we didn't do it - neither did my parents) - but I wouldn't of thought it was "too early". Just tell him when you plan to do it and make sure he keeps it quiet... :o)

I think you have to ask permission before proposing, but its only tradidional so you can do it on the day.

we didn't ask permission and neither did my parents.

As per earlier post they are thinking about the same hotel for New Year so kinda need to ell them the reason why I don't want them to go there. Any else any thoughts? Too early or does it really matter whether it's a year, month, day or hour before I ask my partner hat I ask her father?!?

Well I bit the bullet and asked my OH's parents last night and they were more than happy for me to ask at NY. They hadn't seen it coming but both of them were in tears basically so all good.

Good a few rings in my head but think I'm swaying towards the one in my Avatar photo, what do youse guys think? Going for it in platinum, with a 1ct laser canary yellow (laser treated) stone. As per Edit Notes I've removed the link due to advertising but the code of the ring is R1D011 and the name of the shop/online store starts with an S and is a film in which Kate Beckingsale and John Cusack starred. ?

    Let me know your thoughts.

    Cheers

Ah brilliant news!!!! Glad they were overjoyed! I'll go look at the ring pic now, one thing to consider when choosing her ring is the style of wedding band that will go with it. An awkward shaped stone might be a bugger for finding a ring unless you are willing to have one made Smiley smile

    Hi SidBurns,

That sounds lovely and romantic, just like some of the others have said try not to over reherse it otherwise she will suspect and getting the hotel involved is a good idea.

Glad her parents said yeah. My OH asked my mums blessing in the june and asked me at the beginning of this month so its not too early and I know it meant a huge deal to my mum so im sure it will to her parents too.

With regards to the ring, try and get a ring of hers and take it to the shop to get the correct size and make sure she would be ok with platinum, maybe suggest buying her a ring as a present for christmas just like a signet one or something and try and quiz her. I know my fiancee kind of gave it away with me and told me it was silver and i was so disappointed because i was hoping for a gold one with a big diamond but it turned out to be white gold and its lovely. I dont think the cost should be your biggest aim, i think my OH only spent about £80 but it symbolizes the committment we are making so thats the main thing. Save the extra bit for the wedding.

I agree with the others of make sure she comes up to see you. We girls like the romantic stuff so before you ask the question, start by telling her WHY you have made this decision, tell her what you love about her, how shes made you feel ect then get down on one knee - thats quite important (mine didnt cuz we were in the carpark and it was raining but it was still special.)

Good luck and let us know how it goes - so excited for you!!! ?

    ?

I'm really pleased for you they said yes

The ring is stunning, and you can't go far wrong with a platinum princess cut (but then I am biased) lol. The only thing I've found with mine is it scratches easily and needs cleaning quite regularly. Palladium might be a better option (and it's cheaper)!!

The ring is great im sure you will do your lady proud, and she will be totally blown away by your proposal, and the thought you have put into it, you really do deserve a 'happy new year'!!

This is all very weird - my OH was going to propose last September in Rome but he'd overheard me telling someone how I hoped he wouldn't as it'd be tacky (we were there for my best friend's wedding). So he proposed at New Years (our 5th anniversary my 25th birthday) and that night we stayed in a Hilton. Spooky!

Good luck with it, I think that ring is a safe bet. Lucky girl!
