Ask to see whole albums not just pick of the bunch.

Make sure they have insurance (public liability and professional indemnity) and back up camera.

Make sure you like them and feel comfortable with them.

Be clear about the package you are after and that they do that eg: CD/USB or albums or both.

Find out about their experience, how many weddings have they done? Is it their full time job or do they do other work as well? Its up to you to find what you are happy with and their price will reflect their experience.

Appearance, again personal preference but they should be smart. Again most will be

Go through their contract, do they charge for extra hours?

Find out deposit and when you clear the final balance, do they let you pay in installments.

Find out about a possible engagement shoot, a lot will include them in their packages.

References!! Its good if you are able to check them out personally rather than whats just on the website. My previous clients are always happy to speak to my prospective clients.

Will they do a venue visit? do they want the contact details for the venue manager etc.

There are loads more but a good photographer will sit and go through everything with you.

I would also find out how long between wedding and when you get to see the images and time from ordering the album until when you should expect it. Get this written in to the contract as these are the most common issues..

Thats very good advice from Ami.

If you can tick all those boxes, and you've seen loads of lovely photos and albums and you get on with them personally then I think you've got a winner.
