TOG Help please

vikki-04/07/09, 16 September, 2009 at 12:22 Posted on Planning 0 6

Hi

Im after a bit of advice and wondering if you can help.

I have been having a few problems with my tog since the wedding and today has been the final straw for me.

When we booked our tog we went for the platinum package which included high res disc of all the pictures, an album and proofs & 10 x 8 print of our choice & 15 keyrings.

When we got back off honeymoon our tog came round with the disc & proofs and while we were looking at the disc i said i wasnt happy with the quility of the pictures as the seemed blurry. She said it was just her laptop and not to worry. We have sinced printed some off and in 6 x 4 they are fine but any bigger they begin to blur. H said lets just wait an see what the album is like.

So after endless emails and promises of our 10 x 8 & our mock up album, our 10 x 8 turned up this morning, and im deverstated. It looks awlful. it looks really blurry.

so what i am wondering is what is classed as high res????

It is likely that the disk that you have been given is a disk of proofs. These are aimed to give an idea of content and not usually aimed to be any bigger than 6"x4".

I would though email your photographer for clarification on this....

No expert in the field, but might be worth mentioning...

The package might have included high res pictures, but at what size ?

What is high res at 6x4" might not be if stretched to 10x8".

This way, your photographer is keeping the right to print anything above 6x4 by the sound of things.

If you want 10x8's printed, then you can't do them yourself, you'd need to ask your tog to do it for you.

    Just a possibility.

    Thanks for the replys

I was sort of ok with the fact that the disc didnt go higher than a 6 x 4 before been fuzzy but the image that she has supplied me as part of my package is horrid too, and i would have expected that to be better.

I can get the dpi details from the disc and they as the same as what my home digital camera are, also it gives me details of the camera she used and when i have looked for reviews on the cam if doesnt sound fab. I have mentioned a few things to her and all she keeps saying is that her lens broke the day before and she got this lens as a back up but never used or tried it.

Hmmm...the lens used has no relationship to the filesize. It may have issues over resolution compared to a high end lens, although no pro should use a lens "that" low in resolution that it can't go bigger than 6x4 and I don't believe that one that poor has been made.

So I can help, can you give an idea of the file sizes that you were given for each image and the camera/ lens combo used.......If you want to you can email me an image if that helps.

    Hi Vikki

Sorry you’re having problems, take Peter up on his offer of help – he’s an excellent photographer. If you need another back-up I’d be happy to help as well. Please email me with further details, if you can send me one of your files it would help – don’t reduce it in size in order to send it – just send it as it is.

I’m guessing your images are ‘blurry’ because of the pixellation but it could be because they were taken out of focus? If I see the files I’ll be able to tell for sure.

My workflow involves keeping files as RAW (straight out of the camera), Jpeg files, used for printing and Tiff files used for archiving purposes. Most professional wedding photographers have similar methods that involve keeping hold of various file formats of your wedding images.

Now, in your contract (did you have one?) i’m presuming you were told you would receive the hi-res files, what you’ve received is definitely not hi-res by any stretch of the imagination, in fact a file that only prints upto 6x4” is lo-res, full stop. The fact that she seems reluctant (or unable?) to show you any hi-res files is worrying, why would she not have them on her lap-top? I’d want to show my images off to their very best. Why are you sent an enlarged lo-res file as a 10x8”?? Again this should be at the highest quality – why would she send you an inferior print? It’s bad for business and puzzling.

Reading between the lines, and I may be totally wrong in this, it sounds to me like she actually doesn’t have the hi-res files. This could be for a couple of reasons: she only took lo-res images on the day, or she made some archiving error later on the computer, both of these reasons point to an inexperienced wedding photographer. You may find she’ll stall on producing your album because of this, what sizes do your album prints go up to?

    Hope I can help

    Nicola
