TOG packages?

FutureMrsBrown, 9 June, 2011 at 10:59 Posted on Planning 0 15

Hey guys

We have a friend of the family as our TOG, his is a professional photographer who does not specialise in weddings but has done plenty over the years (he's in his 60's). He did H2B's Bros wedding so I know he is good.

However, he has now said that he only uses a "proper" camera, I.e not digital and the price he has quoted us, while VERY reasonable is only for him taking 36 shots (based on using 3 films), we buy and compile our own album from his shots and he wil give us a CD of digitised images from these shots.

I'm a bit worried as that really does not seem like a lot of photos, I thought he would take LOADS and we would choose the ones we like best. So, what is in your package, I dont need to know prices if you dont want to, just what the package consists of

Our package was for 200 digital images on a disc... but they must have taken thousands on the actual day.

36 doesn't seem very many to me (but I love photos!) and the benefits of a digital camera is that you can see the shots instantly?

Our package is 7 hours, they estimate in 5 hours they'll take about 1000 photos, so in 7 I'm guessing around 1200? Then they'll put around 300-500 on a disk (the good ones)

We get ALL of them (the 400 I mean) on disk, copyright free, and then can order prints/an album from whichever ones we like from them.

Our package included 2000 shots on disc and we selected 80 to go into a picture book album.

That is not alot at all.

Nearly all the wedding photographers I have come across use digital SLRs rather than film!

That's very few photos of what is such a momentous occasion, FMB. We've got around 1300 images from our day, all of which are great, which means various ones that they've deemed not up to scratch will already have been removed by our photographers.

You just need to ask yourself if you'd be happy with only 36 images of your day. What if one of the films is a dud and you only end up with 24? It's not a risk I'd be willing to take. Maybe if he was Mario Testino but I suspect your family friend is not.

Our photographers are a husband and wife team and they're using DSLR's. It depends on our album choice, but We're getting an album of about 40-80 images, 2 parent books which each take about 40 images, and we get all our images on disc for us to make as many copies of as we like. We were never given a number of images that we will get though...i might ask them that when we meet with them again....

I don't think it sounds like a lot...I think you might miss out on some shots of the details and location so that you can choose pics of you and your guests - it depends how much you want pictures of the little things though, it's not important to everyone.

We have our TOG from when I get ready until the end of the evening, so probably about 11 hours and we get 600+ images on a disk with full copywright permission. We also get an album for us and one for each of our parents. We are paying £1200 ish for this.

Everyone is different but we wanted to spend a chuck of our budget on TOG and VOG as these are the things that you can keep forever and re-live your day by.

    Hope this helps x

Alhough I am certain your friend is a great photographer, I fear he may be a little stuck in his ways... To call a film camera a *proper camera* clearly demonstrates this.

All professionals who use digital will have invested a great deal in their equipment and will have digital SLRs which are far more than *proper*.

The other aspect of this which I feel is worrying is that 36 images, for me, will not even cover the *detail shots* I take on the average wedding cover, such as dress, shoes, cake, flowers, etc...

I suspect you may regret the decison, however well intentioned, to entrust the coverage of your wedding to this gentleman. At least on the current deal he is offering you.

I hope it all turns out for the best!

I take more than 36 on a random night out, IMO that's nowhere near enough for a wedding! Our togs are with us 9 hours and we should get about 400-500 copyright free on a CD, plus the albums and other bits. Maybe look around for other togs?

It far too few photos, for a start. Also, by "digitised images", does he mean scans of the photos? You will lose soooo much in this process, even if the shots are prizeworthy to start with. All the beautiful photos we see here, aside from presumably having been selected from a pool of shots as being the best, are likely to have been touched up in some (sometimes minor) way, light levels, red eye etc. You need good digital images for this.

All of the above is a completely amateur comparison of film .v. digital photography. Happy to be corrected.

To put it into perspective, I probably used at least 36 photos in my Hitched report. As much as I love the photos, I'd be sad if they were the only photographic record of my day as they would have missed out so many more things (thankfully I have all of those, I just didn't put the remaining hundreds in the report).

    Hi,

Firstly, I would suggest that he doesn't really want the job / responsibility of doing the photographs and is trying to put the oness on you to turn his offer down.

A wedding photographer would not take only 36 photos...especially on film !

To say he would use a "proper" camera emphasises what I say abaove.....just look at the Royal wedding photographer, he used a 50mp Hasselblad h4d-50 DSLR....(and £26k lighter for doing so !)

Anyway, speaking personally, I typically finish up with around 300+ edited images for the couple to view.

Therefore, I would genuinely recommend you start searching for a wedding photographer and politely decline his offer.

    Sincerely

    Dean

Some of the old school way are too old school.

Surprising that this thread comes up today as I took delivery of a 35mm film camera despite being sold on digital totally.

I bought the film camera because I found I was far too trigger happy with my digital one and that I was starting to think less because of the freedom it gave me.

Now when I want to practise I'll go out with the film camera, limited ISO and only 1 roll of film per outing.

I think though 100 shots is very restrictive. If I was to do a wedding with film I'd use at least 15-20 rolls of film (700+ images).

Decent roll of film = £8

We usually stick a couple of rolls of film through.. as well as shooting the normal digital coverage. I wouldn't say that film is "superior" it just has a "different quality"

I also wouldn't say that MF film records more information than a good pro DSLR either. For us, it is just an artistic choice

Having shot exclusively film, on 35mm and MF and exclusivley digital, and mixed it up, I would say there is no "right or wrong method"

What I would say is that if you prefer a documentary style, 36 shots would be a total challenge in terms of telling the story
