Top storage tips please!

Nutella, 9 September, 2012 at 11:01 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

We are in a 1bed flat till sometime after the wedding, I've always said it's not claustraphobic, it's perfect size for just the 2 of us, the layout is good which means we're not tripping over each other.

BUT recently 'stuff' just seems to be accumulating all over the place and it's getting me down. So I'm on a mission to get it decluttered. I already have chests of draws and storage things in just about every nook and cranny but I'm after any top tips as to how to keep clutter to a minimum. Also if you have a particular style of unit that works well for you then please share.

I am desperate!

Have already started going through my wardrobe and am coming to terms with the fact that certain items will simply never fit again so am going to be ebaying, even though the hoarder in me would love to keep most of them 'for the memories'!

Vacuum bags! They are brilliant. I love mine and they take up so little space too which is great, I put all mine in a big plastic box.

Have a massive clear out of things you really will never use or need again, make sure drawers and stuff are cleared out as the amount of times I have gutted Hs bedside drawer of the living room storage unit and it looks empty after a tidy.

Get plastic boxes for your wardrobe (ones that stack) and tidy things into them.

Sorry if this is no help, just what I do Smiley smile

We (humans) tend to keep most useful stuff between shoulder and knee height, so many people don't process available space outside this area. Any space up high we have is populated by cordinating boxes full of rarely used but must keep items. We have rows on top of each bookcase and wardrobe. Vacuum bags under beds or in divan drawers are great. On bookcases, if you have excess shelf heig over a row of books, stack at least one row of books per shelf in a horizontal fashion. It's amazing how much space you can free up, just by using the entire height of the shelves for this row - use free space for box files, photo albums, mini-drawer cabinets etc.

Oh, and throw some sh*t away Smiley smile

    Excellent stuff both, thanks.

I have a couple of vacumn bags for under the bed already, the problem is the underneath of the bed is not very accessible and this summer has been ridic in terms of weather, every time I think I can put my winter boots away its freezing and I have to get them out again!!

I have 3 nearly ceiling height bookcases in the lounge, I already do the horizontal thing with books but I can see some space above DVDs that I shall go and fill! I've got a few wicker draw units that slot into a few places but I may get some more actually so that stuff is more hidden.

'Wedding crap' doesn't help matters and I've already got 3 massive boxes at the IL's as well as BM dresses in the best mans wardrobe!!

One thing that bugs me actually is we have a little balcony however it's too little to do anything with but takes a chunk out of the actual living space, it's just dead space that does nothing, I wonder if I could find some sort of weather proof 'shed style' thing that would fit on it... (it's literally tiny 250 x 70cm!)

    Outdoor storage

Not pretty but demonstrates that they exist!

We got a self storage unit for all our clutter - we're in denial about having to sort it out so it's somewhere we can't see it ?

We will be getting one of these after the wedding when we put the flat up for sale but for now we just can't afford it as well - although I was sorely tempted last night..

Well after Footlongs help with the balcony storage last weekend I thought only fair I flash the finished product, so ta-dah!! Now I just need to decide which stuff to put out there

Baskets for wardrobe haven't turned up yet which is a pain so those will have to wait till later in the week.

Bit late to this and you've already had very good tips but a couple of other little things

If you have a coffee table, put a blanket box type table there instead. I love mine to chuck stuff in!

Under your sink in the bathroom do you have a unit? I find the cupboard underneath a godsend.

In our old little bedroom I swapped our bedside tables for tall thin chest of drawers - its not great for bedside lighting / putting a drink / alarm clock but it worked wonders as a storage solution.

My friend has one of those boxes you've put on your balcony, it's very watertight.

OH and I live in a large 3 bed house with our dog and cat. Somehow we have managed the fill the house, conservatory and garage!! (I know you would have thought we were hoarders!!)

We are lucky with the space we have, but recently we had a huge clear out, OH wants to car boot it all to get some money for wedding (which is fine) the only thing is he has since been reluctant to actually get off his a**e and sell the stuff. Our smallest bedroom is chockablock with stuff to sell. And it's getting me down. I confronted him this morning and he is ebaying some DVD's. (Yes this is his solution). I tried to argue that not everything sells on ebay!!

So hopefully with a bit more nagging the little room will be cleared out to make room for wedding bits (needing use of desk in little room so currently all wedding stuff is on the dining table).

Next clear out stop is spare bedroom!!

Sorry this turned into a rant!! Apologies!!

Beez love the coffee table idea.. I have a few blanket style boxes but I might have to persuade OH to get another (this whole tidying up thing is costing a fair bit!!)

Bathroom is ok for storage actually, I've got a shelf along the back of the sink and then an over door 4 shelf thing that hangs over the outside of the shower in a 'dead space'

Ashlili, I know that feeling, OH hasn't lifted a finger except to pick holes in what I'm sorting out!! I've got loads of my stuff on ebay already and more to follow. DVDs do sell actually, I sold a few back in the day, just whack them on at 99p and make sure to cover postage and you'll be fine, you won't make hundreds but you might get a few p out of it and gets them off your hands!

Some great advice here already, but I just wanted to add; if it's the wedding clutter that's getting to you, it won't last forever, I remember the days of feeling like my house was being invaded but it's all gone now.

    They are great right?

He's put all the CDs and DVDs we were going to get rid of on ebay today starting at 99p. But to be honest the CDs and DVDs aren't taking up much room!!
