Top table design *FLASHES* - pls help me choose

xKellsBellsx, 25 October, 2012 at 12:33 Posted on Planning 0 35

My mum and I have mocked up some top table designs in her dining room for my winter wedding this December, and would love your opinions. We are getting married in a 15th century tithe barn, and apart from the buttonholes, are having no fresh flowers - all the centrepieces are twigs in vases with fairy lights and candles. Please could you take a look at the 2 options and let me know what you think? Thanks!

Option 1 (pine cone garland):

Option 2 (twigs):

I think option 1. Option 2 looks too busy and I can imagine drinks getting caught and spilt!

    Very impressive designs though!

Definitely option 1, it looks lovely and very cosy.

Option 2 is a bit too harsh for me!

Option 1 is lovely for a winter wedding.

Option 2 looks really messy, sorry (although i like the hanging heart)

No, don't say sorry - this is good, I get carried away with twiggy things! My OH said it looked a bit creepy, so he would agree with you! Didn't even think of the practicalities of people catching themselves on it, so that has been really helpful too.

On the real one, there will be 2 smaller hanging hearts on either side of the big one.

    I vote option 1,

Goodluck planning rest of your day and ultimately the choice is yours....

Option 1 without a doubt. I'd be a nervous wreck worrying about people catching themselves on the twigs in number 2!

    Option 1 for me.

Option 2 is very very twiggy, and whilst I like the twigs idea, its just too twiggy for me.

Have you been collection fir cones for months or bought them? We were meant to but have completely forgotten(another December bride, and a similar theme I think?).

I have been collecting them, but these particular ones are a proper garland, and although you can't see it in the photo, they have been painted subtlely with silver glitter, so they're quite pretty. These are from a local garden centre in Bedfordshire, but I did see them in John Lewis too (although for double the price!).

Are you going for a sort of winter woodland theme? Are you getting married this December?

I think I know where you are coming from with the twigs, kind of an understated elegance thing, very minimalist (is that the word, not sure?) and I can really see this option 2 working well if you get the balance right. Especially I think it would look right with the twigs in vases you have - option 1 might be too different from the other tables then? What I really like about option 1 though is that you get different shades of brown and grey, even a bit silvery in there...

    Option 1....option 2 scares me a bit.

    Don't know why.

Option 1 for me too. I really like this and it looks more weddingy and less messy for people eating around than option 2. I'd be frightened of people's clothes catching on option two and either doing damage to their outfits or worse still, someone standing up and walking away with the twigs with them. Are people sitting all round the tables? I was wondering about people being seated near the hearts hanging down? Would they have somewhere to put their legs?

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures but I'm having a winter wedding 1st December! My centrepieces are wreaths made from silver twigs & top table is 3 pieces made from silver twigs, pinecones & lights! So kind of a mixture between option 1 & 2! have you tried mixing it together with shorter twigs?

Option 1 is lovely. Number 2 is too busy. Could work with smaller twigs though, love the idea!

Just to go against the grain, I vote option 2. I think it's quirky and less boring. Perhaps you could use less twigs/smaller twigs or just generally place them better so people don't catch themselves or get their drinks stuck(!)

    I think option 1.

I like the idea of option 2 and can see where your going, but at the mo I think it looks to messy. Maybe try some smaller twigs.

Yup, 29th. My mum (bless her) has been panicking about the centrepieces, but I think we're going to try something with a big square vase, cranberries, ivy and a pillar candle. I'm not sure we have a theme - just lots of greenery, tealights, fairylights, firelight, and some of those twigs with red berries on, so just wintry and cosy I guess.... I'm really enjoying the scope for winter decoration, plus so much of it can be collected ourselves and we're not having many fresh flowers so its really keeping that side of the costs down.

Looking forward to seeing some pictures of your wedding - sounds similar to mine as we're having a tithe barn too - not long to go now!

Those centrepieces sound fab to me - they will look really elegant and christmassy. I agree on the fresh flower cost - that has been a godsend really.

Yes, not long to go for either of us - sorted a lot out in the past few days so feeling a lot more relaxed. I didn't know just how true it would be when people said the last few months fly by...they really really have!

Out of interest which one do you prefer?

I also prefer option 2, I love that it's different and as Funky stated.. rustic looking that will look great in the tithe barn.

I prefer option 2 too! It is more likely to fit with the centrepieces and I don't like things to be too neat! I take on board what the others have said about perhaps using smaller twigs - I might cut the garland up and place it in between the twigs to get the best of both worlds. Either way, I've definitely enjoyed doing it!

Love them both, could you mix them up? Not wanting to put spanner in the works but will your guests be able to see you over the candles? It's your wedding day, everyone wants to see you and you need the best vantage point to see all your guests enjoying your special day.

You read my mind - I posted just before you did and said that this is what I might do!

I think the candles look higher than they are in real life, so hopefully I can still see out over everyone, but I will be definitely giving it a try. Thanks for that - it didn't even occur to me.
