Not many of my customers do it now, it has to be fruit cake and most don't want a fruit cake at all or perhaps just have one tier to serve on the day. It also depends on whether you're going to have a future occasion like a Christening to save it for. Lots of people marrying now already have their children or aren't planning on having any they may have Christened so it's not something many people bother with now.

I'm having 3 tiers - 1 fruit, 1 sponge & 1 choc sponge - and they're all going on the buffet as dessert. I've already got a 2 year old son and he's more than enough for me?

I was going to, but then i found out you had to take the icing off before freezing it and then re icing it for the christening, sounded like a lot of hassel for me but the idea is nice. Also fruit cake was too expensive so i've gone for a sponge cake now.

We get the odd few delivered to us for re-decoration, but certainly not many these days.

Invariably, a lot are stored incorrectly and cannot be salvaged.

We recently had a lady that kept the cake under her bed for eight years, it was covered in dust and had obviously fermented, but she still wanted it re-decorated... LOL

Needless to say, we did refuse...

I don't think I would bother with that to be honest - I wouldn't take it out and eat it a year or so later, It will probably just go to waste. though some people put it in the freezer - not sure how well that works.

We are. Got the Mother in Law all excited when we told her... Had to stress it would need to last several years until the christening!

Yes. My nan made my brother's wedding cake (he's quite a lot older than me) and was certain she wouldn't be around to make mine, but she is! She is, however, nearly entirely blind now but still wants to make the effort and we thought it'd be lovely to include her. As a compromise, she's making the top tier and I'm making the bottom two tiers using her equipment that she's going to leave me in her will (which I expect will be another 20 years, she's a trooper!)

    Otherwise, I wouldn't bother.
