Train conundrum with a mini *flash*

clarabella1972, 9 January, 2012 at 16:53 Posted on Planning 0 14

Not exactly up there with the answer to world peace, but I'm having sleepless nights making my mind up about my train. I always thought I would have no train or a puddle train, but the dress I ended up picking has quite a big train IMO. I'm very much a jeans and boots kind of girl - not many skirts in my wardrobe, so a big part of me feels very self-conscious having such a big train.

I can have it shortened (which I would have if all things were equal) but that will cost about £100 (which I don't fancy). On the other hand it has lovely detail on it and will only be down for half an hour or so for the service before I pin it up. On the other hand, will I feel uncomfortable and will people think I look a bit ridiculous/over dressed given my normal attire. And so it goes on...

And now for the flash...

    WSS!

I guess you felt amazing in the dress when you tried it on - so I would also guess you'll feel even more so on the day with hair and make up and the shoes and everything done. I doubt you will even stiop to think about being self conscious about not being used to wearing dresses. I would suggest getting in on a bit early and practice walking round in it a bit though.

My friend wasn't at all used to long/big dresses either and only had a tiny train but kept trying to walk backwards and standing on it!

Thanks girls. I did love it when I tried it on, but I was also concerned about the train at the time. The niggling doubt hasn't gone away. But you're right, it is a pretty one! :-)

I was the same as you, wasn't planning on having a train then fell in love with a dress with a huge one! I live in jeans too and ummed and ahhed about keeping the day but in the end I decided my wedding day is going to be one of the few (only??) occasions I can get away with it so I have kept it and am looking forward to swanning about in it now! So I would keep it - plus your train is stunning!

Wedding dresses are different to normal attire - they don't have to match your usual that's the fun Smiley smile

Nobody is going to think you're over dressed on your wedding day because your dress has a train. It's a heart vs head decision really - but ultimately if you're not sure then more dress shopping may be in order ?

The train is gorgeous and it's probably the only time in your life you can wear a train so don't be put off just because it isn't 'normal' attire. I wear jeans and trainers all the time but quite fancy having a train. That said only have it if you are comfortable in it.

Do your hair and make up, wear a pair of heels similar to what you are thinking of for the big day and go try the dress again and strut up and down the shop to see how you feel. Maybe even have a cheeky glass of wine before you go in!

If you're still not sure then keep looking, good luck!

Personally I would chop it off as I would trip myself up?

You wear what you want on your wedding day if you want to walk out with a 20ft train noone would bat an eyelid Smiley smile Its your day, as long as you are happy and comfortable nothing else matters.

I'd get it shortened, since at the moment the dress falls in an A-line then the train just sort of spreads on the floor rather than drapes naturally following the line of the dress (if that makes any sense). If it's shortened to a puddle train it will look lovely. Depending on the style of the dress, you may be able to have it shortened and keep the embellishment, either by shortening from the waist, or by unpicking the trim and reattaching it to the shortened train. A good seamstress should be able to give you options.

Keep it, it's so beautiful and it would be such a shame to spend money on losing a part of your gown! I have never in my life heard anyone say a bride was over dressed, regardless of her normal attire.

I'd keep it as it is - looks lovely to me. And as others have said, you can't be overdressed on your wedding day, even if you do usually live in jeans!

Keep it! It looks lovely and although you say your a jeans girl, your wedding day is the only day you can wear a dress like that!

Your wedding is one of the only times you can wear an over the top dress with lots of sparkle that you wouldn't normally wear. The train is gorgeous! please don't take it off!

Well I am definitely not going to pick another dress - I love the dress, it's only the length of the train I'm not sure about. I've also paid for half of it already. The seamstress said she can take the lace and beading off, chop a bit off and put the lace further up, so it won't get lost.

I'm really overwhelmed with your responses though - so glad you like it!
