Training and the Job Centre

glider12000, 13 February, 2009 at 21:17 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 14

I am interested in doing some training which will allow me to progress in my career once I start again. Has anyone got any knowledge about whether the job centre would pay for this training or are there only approved courses which can be chosen?

You can do a part time course (16 hours or less a week) if you are receiving JSA IIRC.

So if I wanted to do a 5 day course, I would have to come of JSA? And would I be able to get funding to pay for it?

*takes head in hands and stands by for incoming*

I worked in a resource centre for the unemployed, and, with a very, very few exceptions anything that the Job Centre will pay for.... Isn't worth doing, unless at a very basic skill level (learning to read, write, add-up)

Two exceptions which spring to mind (and I think they were the only two I encountered) are HGV 1 training (loads of strings, but effectively you can/could get the licence for no dough) and a childcare qualification the details of which escape me (I dealt exclusively with males for the training modules).

We had training providers who would offer 'decent' clients a place, with a contract to state they would pay their fees 'when employed', provided we didn't refer them through the State..... (only a couple, but even so).

Things may have changed, but frankly I doubt it.

What were you thinking of doing?

I want to train to be a CRM Instructor. When I get to my new airline it would allow me to teach this for the yearly courses that flight and cabin crew need to pass. I would also be allowed to freelance, allowing me to earn extra cash by going to smaller airlines and training their crew as required.

If the course is employment related and you have evidence of the course, you will be excused for the length of time of the course, however you are only allowed a 2 week period at a time and no more that 4 weeks in a 12 month period. Hope that makes sense. If not speak to your advisor

Can't say, wasn't much call for it in 'working class North Belfast' ?

It's worth asking, but I wouldn't hold out much hope. I was normally looking at 'professional' IT quals. Which were never funded.

Are you on PPRune? Someone on there will know the opportunities I'm sure.

Now ATCO is a job I'd have really liked.

    But, c'mon..... Bournemouth?

    (that may be hideously dated)

Not hideously dated at all! Training still takes place in Bournemouth ? I applied for ATCO last year but failed at stage 2. I'll retry this year as it's something I really really want to do ?

Ach.... I did my A/G ticket about (Jesus!) 20 years ago.

    More actually.

THE job. Good luck with your next try, if some of the muppets I know that are in it can manage, I'm sure you will.

(That's a wee bit scary actually!)

Hey Keke, didn`t make stage 2, but It was an option that was worth exploring!

Have an interview on thursday for a full pilot scholarship with Etihad, although the odds are 250 TO 1! ?
