Transport!?! $$$$$$

mandspice, 8 April, 2013 at 14:21 Posted on Planning 0 14

My first real experience of the dreaded "wedding" word inflating prices to unreasonable proportions....

I need a vehicle (or two) to get myself and the bridal party from the hotel we're staying in to the venue we're getting married and having the reception in. It's a one way journey, ten minutes maximum and I definitely didn't ask for ribbons, champagne, photo opportunities or anything else. I just need wheels. However, I don't want to risk booking a "normal" mini-cab on the day in case they're delayed or the car is dirty or something - obviously I want something clean and presentable. I also wanted to mention the word "wedding" because I think they should understand the importance of timings etc and that my dress will need to be squeezed in.

So far I've been quoted anything between £250 and £350 from executive taxi companies, wedding car companies and limo hire companies!! When I tried to explain that we just need a means of transport they didn't seem to get it and one said they have to charge that amount as they can't take on any other bookings that day (why, exactly?).

Finally I've found a mini-bus company (the glamour!) that will do the journey for £30. It's a white 16 seater mini-bus (there will be 9 of us) and it looks a bit like a fat Hummer if you squint ?

I'm still astounded at the quotes I was given though. I can understand those prices for a full day's hire with extras but I just want a smart-ish and very reliable taxi service and no-one seemed to understand that. Talk about cashing in on the word "wedding".

We got two "executive taxis" which, between 12 noon and 2 pm, made four x twenty minute return journeys, for £100. Ribbons were supplied and the drivers wore full-on chauffeur suits with hats!

We are in the North West though - perhaps even this is far cheaper Oooop North?

That IS a good deal! But even here daaaaahn Saaaaaahf (and you can't get much further South) I've managed to book a wedding taxi for 3 hours for £160 and it's big enough to hold about 8 people; and that's all decked out and for unlimited journeys within the time we've got it booked- so we're heading to the seaside for wedding pics! Yaay!

Although, having said that, we were also quoted £250 for 1 VW camper for 2 journeys (from home to reg office, then from reg office to reception) so it can vary HUGELY.

I love your description of your minibus...'Fat Hummer'....*snort*

Ahhh, so you're probably paying London prices then (Essex is pretty similar I'd wager)?

    We're in Portsmouth.

Our needs transport wise sound exactly like yours, except for fewer people. Our cheapest quote for a car located within 6 miles of my house and less than that to church, was £400. Luckily I managed to get in touch with a local gent who has associations with the church and is a member of the classic car club- I now have 2 vintage cars for a total of £175! Well happy :0)

I think you've made a good choice with your hummeresque car... I'm sure it will look very smart on the day and do you proud :0)

FTLOMB, do you mind letting me know what copmany you used, I am getting married at the same place you did, staying there over night but myself, parents and bridesmaids are staying at another hotel (think the Cottons) the night before the wedding so need transport to get us to the venue on the day. I am not bothered about any fancy cars as it a 10 min journey max, just something like what you mentioned an exectuive taxi?

    Thanks in advance!

You have really made me giggle with your squint comment - I think that will be perfect!

I was thinking of getting a limo as they are usually cheap and can squeeze us all in - an hours journey - starting to worry that it's going to cost a bomb!!

LOVE the wedding taxis - gorgeous x

I feel your pain. I've been quoted £350 for a 35 minute drive. thats to the church and then to the reception venue. I just cant justify those prices. This thread has helped me loads. I love the white taxi! x
