Trickers or any puppy people...

Missus S, 25 August, 2011 at 15:34 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 46

How long does it take for your puppy to does the business after eating? All the books etc i read said 5-30 minutes so to take them out near enough straight away after eating, but our girly can take anything from 2-5 HOURS! Shes eating ok but is eating grass and rubbish every time she goes out in the garden, so we're constantly pulling stuff from her mouth.

    Just seen this S.

Harley would go out himself straight after eating and go within about 10 minutes. Now he is a bit older my H takes him out after every meal and he does the business then.

Unfortunately puppies will try and eat anything! so you will have to watch her and make sure she has plenty of toys to chew and carry instead, they put things in their mouths like babies do out of curiosity. With the toileting as soon as she has done the business praise her loads then when she is let out she should start going quicker to get the praise! poos may take longer though depending on diet etc she may not need to go after 30 minutes. x

Sorry, but you do NOT use sharp words and certainly NOT flick/slap a dog, they will see going outside as a punishment and will not do their business at all. A dog can be trained with shouting or hitting!

I would suggest you take your puppy outside after her meal and whatever the weather you stay outside with her until she has done her business, when she is actually doing "it" then you could perhaps use a word such as "go toilet" that she will associate with going to the loo, once she is familiar with that word she could quite easily go to the loo at your command.. howver, while she is little I would praise her and perhaps give her a tidbit, she will associate going to the loo then as a fun thing and start to go more "quickly".

    Hope this helps.

Excellent advice. Ths is exactly what we did/do. Harley is 13 weeks tomorrow and he caught on really quickly so after about 2 days he was going outside and we never need to tell him off.

Thanks everyone. I do all this already, the praise, sharp No, the go toilet command, which is why I'm worried as we can be outside for bloody ages. Iv made a note all week how long in-between eating to pooing and it's average 3 hours. She's started scooting today so I wonder If she's poorly? At the vets next fri or do you think I should go b4?

Sorry, it's where they sit in floor and drag their bums, like to itch it. She had one slightly softer poo last night but back to normal today and she's eating fine, really well in fact. Sorry tmi! X

Scooting often means that they need worming which is very important to do regularly, especially in a puppy. If she is too busy eating rubbish in the garden I personally would stick her on a lead & actually walk her. Walking gets everything moving through their guts so she is more likely to get on with doing what she should be doing instead of eating grass etc. I'm a dog sitter/dog walker & I find most dogs will do a poo within 15-20 minutes of leaving the house for a leg stretch.

Yeah iv been thinking about trying her on lead when let her out. Can't take her out walking as not had last injection, that's next week. I'm hoping walkin will get her bowels moving. Zi don't mind if it's just her slow digestive system but worries she's poorly! God it's like having a toddler watching them all the time ! X

Did the person you got her from not provide you with a puppy care sheet or give you any advice. My puppy needed worming every 2 week until he was 12 weeks and then once a month until 6 months old.

You can get Panacur Paste from www.medicanimal.com for a fraction of what they charge at the vets. I suggest you get some worming stuff asap as it is very important.

If she is doing this especially after a soft poo it could very likely be anal glands - they usually get emptied when the dog poos (its the scent part!) if she has had soft poo then they can become full and therefore itchy. It is very important to get her wormed asap if the breeder didn't do it although she would have to have a large worm burden for them to be making her scoot so you would probably see other signs pot belly, diarrhoea etc. (I am a vet nurse by the way and don't just have a vested interest in dog poo!!)

Oh don't get me started Tricks I'm like a proud mother! If you were here I'd be swiping through my er, 500 or so iPhone photos if her ha! Shes brill, super intelligent. Been doing a little bit of training in the fields on walks, cos she will be a gun dog for daddy. She will sit from a distance, come to your side, walk at heel, go to bed, sit for dinner, and I taught her hi-five which my H is NOT happy about but its too cute! Her only downside is she will eat anything. We bought her a kong which are meant to be tough as she'd ruined numerous other toys, but within a couple of days we had to take it off her as half had bloody gone! And we now have bites and chew marks on dining chairs and skirtings. Oops. She is a darling though and has really been a help in focusing all my mummy feelings after losing my little boy. She keeps me busy and gets me out, and gives me lovely cuddles. How is your little boy getting on? X

Excellent news that she is getting on so well. You talk about her like I talk about my boy!

My boy is a monster now and still got loads more growing to do. He also eats everything but luckily no household items except for the Christmas Next catalogue.......

    They are brilliant arent they.
