Tricky Situation

rosie24601@hotmail.com, 3 April, 2012 at 14:51 Posted on Planning 0 8

So i have found a venue (Hotel) with mates rates (i run a drama group and we rent a room once a week), a wedding night with breakfast for free and Decorations and food ALL WITHIN BUDGET (1000)

So all is good UNTILL......My OH points out that there are stairs leading up to the room and my dad has a leg muscle problem and uses a walking stick. I pointed out that we are going to have dad in a wheel chair and have 2 of my Brothers in law carry him up. The venue have seen it done before, plus this Hotel is my dream venue with all the £££ perks too. If we went anywhere else we would go over budget.

So do i ask my dad? he is a tricky man to deal with and we are not Very Very close

Really stumped Smiley sad

P.S my mum said she would do anything for my happiness on my wedding day (but her and dad are separated and i lived with her most of my life, so she is biased)

Sorry to ramble .....Smiley sad

Doesn't the hotel have a ramp for wheelchair access?

Our venue have steps leading down to the room for my evening reception and I mentioned to my wedding coordinator a few of my family members have mobility problems and she said they can put their ramps out for all the places that have steps. Its worth asking your venue if they have them.

The stairs are like domestic ones that go from ground floor to first so think they are too steep from ramps Smiley sad x

For such a good price it would be best to work around your Dad even if it means booking him into a nearby hotel with a lift to the rooms. Sounds like you got a great deal there from the venue.

Talk to your dad about it, it sounds a good deal, but how would you feel if your dad refused to come because he didn't want to be carried or anything - would you still want this place anyway?

It sounds like you dont get on too well with your dad, but you still need to consider him. Can he walk upstairs with the stick? if so then no worries. However, for a person in a wheelchair to have to be carried upstairs, it could be quite humiliating/embarrassing for him IYSWIM? Its why we have the disability discrimination act, if the hotel are offering this room for hire, then it really should be accessible to all.

Whatever, you need to speak to your dad to see what he can/cant do, is/isnt comfortable with. x

It sounds harsh, probably because I dont have a very good relationship with my dad, but Id prepare him rather than ask him if its Ok. If he wants to be there, he will not miss it for the sake of some stairs. At some point he will encounter stairs, and at the saving of thousands to you, i think it'd be worth it for him to climb them or be carried.

On a budget, you might not have much alternative. I know you probably feel awful, but if it was the other way around, im sure your dad would feel terrible for you having to give up your dream venue to make it more wheelchair friendly.

That all said, I write this with a history of a bad relationship with my dad who will not be at my wedding. If it was my mum on the other hand, id be bending over backwards to accomodate her, then again like you mum she'd do anything for me.

I am going to talk to him and just lay it out that this is the only place in Budget and that no one will even see him going up the stairs as he will leave before everyone

    Thanks everyone!
