...is a good twenty minutes too long (like most Hollywood films) but I haven't laughed so much in ages.

And Robert Downey Jr deserves some kind of award for sheer bravery - not since Les Dennis in Extras has anyone risked public career suicide quite so fearlessly.

Some idea of exactly what a tightrope RDJ was walking can be seen in this YouTube profile.

We LOVED it. So very funny, and the fake trailers at the start are just note-perfect; we were crying with laughter just at the look on Robert Downey Jr's face.

I shall have to overcome my dislike of Jack Black to see this. RDJ is one of my favourite actors.

I was going to review it in more detail, but the Observer's veteran Philip French has saved me the bother - I agree pretty much 100% with him.

And then, in the interests of balance (and for a laugh), here are the negative IMDB comments. Some people really didn't like it, did they? ?

I loved this film. I was surprised with Tom Cruise, I didn't know he was in it and he did make me laugh. I love RDJ and he was great.

Absolutely brilliant - thanks for the recommendation. I couldn't believe it when I realised that it was RDJ playing that character. I nearly fell off my chair. And Tom Cruise was incredible - I am embarrassed to admit I didn't realise it was him until about ten minutes from the end.

Waaaaah, my irony radar just exploded " It fails lamentably in a 2 penny circus movie, maybe not good enough for small retarded children."??

I saw this on Tuesday and laughed myself into a wobbly legged state. My best movie mate quite loathes Ben Stiller and even he liked it. And

Robert Downey Juniour really can play anything and make it ace. Oh and I may have since purchased a Crystal Method album to which I may or may not dance to Tom Cruise stylee.

I echo all the previous positive sentiments. RDJ is wonderful and is getting so much better looking with age! His blonde hair and blue contacts really suited him too. I liked Tom Cruise in it and I really hate it when that happens....

The only problem I had was I thought some of the dialogue was a bit muffled/mumbled but I'll probably buy it and watch with subtitles to make sure I catch everything.

I assumed the fact that you didn't have a clue what RDJ was saying half the time was part of the joke! But I suspect I'll be watching with subtitles too.

(Unless they pull a Rab C. Nesbitt when the Teletext subtitles were - deliberately - even more incomprehensible than the spoken version!)

Can't wait to go and see this. Me and H love anything with Ben Stiller in so have been wanting to see this since we saw the traillers for it a few months ago. It's just having time to fit it in.
