Tropical Storms

KTD, 17 August, 2008 at 11:10 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

We are heading to the Dominican Republic for 2 weeks on Tuesday

I have just read that there has been storms in Cuba, Haiti near the Dom Rep and some people have died Smiley sad

Have you ever been in a Tropical Storm? Do the staff warn you where to go etc?

The forecast looks ok (and hubby always tells me to ignore them) but it's still pretty scary!

I have been in a hurricane in Mexico (we deliberately waited until November when the season was supposed to be over and got caught in the latest hurricane - seasonally for 100 years!).

Unfortunately summer is hurricane season in that area.

For us, the hotel had security guards on every external door and we were not allowed outside. There were trees being uprooted and tiles from the roof of a nearby hotel flying around.

The doors that led to the pool/beach were locked.

The power went out for one day and the lobby area flooded.

The main restuarant at our hotel was partially outside and they had to close it and move all the tables to the main reception area.

It was eermmmm an interesting holiday.

I've been in several tropical storms as I grew up in the Caribbean and it's really not as scary as it sounds. Obviously, being in a hotel they will take the necessary precautions such as putting up storm shutters etc, and you will find notices posted around advising you of the current conditions.

Alot of the reasons people are killed is due to poorly built houses etc, so in the poor areas where they still live in what are effectively shacks. The big hotels are built to survive in severe weather conditions. Please don't worry - you may just have to hole up in your room for a day with a few good books.
