Turkey - Why is it cheaper to pay with sterling?

Clohugs, 8 September, 2008 at 15:46 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

Could anyone give me a bit of advice?
We have booked a hire car & transfers for our honeymoon to Turkey & were quoted £200. I emailed them today to ask what methods of payment they accept & they said that if we pay in cash with sterling when we collect the car it will be £200, but if we choose to pay with Lira/on credit card the amount will be £231. They didn't stipulate a method of payment when we booked & we had planned to pay with credit card, but I don't understand why it would be better for them to get sterling rather than Turkish Lira.

I aren't why to be honest, i just know that when we go we always pay with stirling as it's better to barter with at the markets.

It used to be because sterling was a far more stable currency - Turkish inflation was running at 25% not that long ago, so the Lira didn't hold its value - but the pound did.

I thought they'd got things under control now, although I could be wrong.

OK, double digit inflation is back again:

"After a six-year boom, the Turkish economy, valued at $660 billion, is racked by inflation once again. Driven by record prices for commodities including fuel, and a surge in government spending, the inflation rate jumped to 12.1 percent in July from a 37-year low of 6.9 percent a year earlier."

Ah ok - thanks everyone. P&P - I thought the inflation was under control, with the new Turkish lira but it's obviously not. Gah... I'm not sure what we'll do now. H2B is adament we're paying £200 on the credit card but I'm pretty sure they'll not be able to charge a CC in GBP.
