Two cakes?!

Kat44, 23 February, 2011 at 22:16 Posted on Planning 0 18

I've been watching Four Weddings US and noticed a few times now that they seem to have two wedding cakes. One traditional and one 'Grooms' cake which seems to be a novelty type. (The ones tonight included some mountain thing and a giant guitar and speaker!)

As so many American traditions seem to be winging their way over here (eventually), can you see this being picked up in the UK and what do you think of them generally?

Personally I think they're over the top and not necessary though I kind of like the fact it's the Groom's little statement.

I went to a wedding last year and there was the usual wedding cake and a cheese cake (4 tiers of cheese trundles) right behind our table because the groom loves cheese- it smelled really bad though lol and had to be taken out of the room after photos! I liked the idea.

Not quite the same thing but my daughter is having a 3 tier decorated cake to cut at the WB and also a separate plain iced fruit cake which would not be on display. Not as a novelty but just that it was more cost effective.

My Sister got married 6 years ago and had a Groom's cake. It was an articulated lorry with "*New surname* Haulage" on it.. Her Husband is a trucker.

I'd have loved a 'cheese cake' but as my b2b is lactose intolerant a bucket of lactofree cream cheese didn't quite have the same appeal.

Aren't cupcakes etc already a 'novelty item' rather than a traditional wedding cake?

My friends weren't fussed about cake when they married and had cupcakes as theirs. I wouldn't go for it myself, but thought they looked really nice.

My sis had cupcakes too and they were gorgeous and guests couldn't get enough of them. I am opting for 3 tier flavoured sponge cake and a seperate West Indian boozy fruit cake for the fruit cake lovers.

We had two cakes - a big chocolate one which we used as dessert, and then a traditional two tier fruit cake which we had later in the evening - it worked really well!

Personally I don’t think there should be any need for a ‘Groom’s Cake’, especially when people are tending to go more and more for something a bit more novelty-esque for a wedding cake. We are both having input into what type of cake we want (made easier I guess by the fact that I am actually making it!) and so it will be our cake together which is what the whole day should be about surely, your shared tastes and styles?

I think it is just the good ol’ American idea of excess…the more is more mentality creeping over here again and infiltrating our good old British way of doing things!

We are having multiple cakes. 3 main ones, plus a few other choices....

and we are having fireworks in them ;-)

Which is something you see at a lot of Eastern European weddings

I saw 4 Weddings too, I wasn't bothered about having one cake never mind two!

Also, I can't get my head round how the American's have a big massive fat b*stard buffet (cocktail hour?) BEFORE the main meal. WTF is that about?

I think the cocktail hour buffet thing is a bit strange too, but from what I can gather, they don't have an evening buffet like we do, so it's kind of their version, just the other way round. However, most of them get married late afternoon / early evening so regardless, that's a hell of a lot of food in a very short space of time!!

Ou daughter is having 3 cakes! A four tier wonky cake of lemon drizzle, carrot, cherry and chocolate, a seperate single tier traditional fruit wedding cake and a 3 tier pork pie wedding cake which will be cut up and served with peas at the evening buffet.

We're having a 'traditional' (ish) cake, a novelty cake and cup cakes. We make cakes and couldn't decide which style to go with for our own wedding so we decided to do them all ?
