Two Cars

Kegsey, 30 May, 2008 at 09:27 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 47

I'm interested in couples/families who have two cars and how they are used. Is one car pretty much only used to get one of you to work and the other car used to get the other one of you to work and any outings/shopping/etc? Or do both cars get used for things other than getting to work?

We have one car but then, only I can drive. But if H did drive (and, hopefully, he will soon) we won't be buying another car.

We work in different directions so both take cars to work. At weekends/evenings we take the one that has petrol or if its a decent length journey we go in Mr G's because its more powerful and nicer than mine.

We have two, they get each of us to work but at the weekend I use my car for trips shopping/visiting friends, but any joint or long journeys are done in MrSC's car. We probably could live without the second car but I would hate getting the bus to work and also losing my ability to 'just pop' somewhere when I fancy it.

We have two cars. Mine is used for taking me to work, taking the kids to school (7 miles so no chance of walking to school!) and ferrying kids around on their various social occasions. Also for long journeys where we need to take lots of luggage or more than two people.

H's car is used to get him to work mainly but also for some journeys at weekends/evenings, like when we go out for the evening, go to Tescos, go to see my mum or for long journeys where we don't need lots of luggage space. His car is much smaller than mine but amazingly economical on petrol so if we don't need the space we use his ie. when we go to London for football.

We have three cars between two of us - two of the cars are mine.

Mr WT has a Focus to get him to work and back and I have a Smart to get me to work and back. I also have a Mitsubishi Pajero for weekends, off roading and lugging big stuff around.

We've had two cars for the past year - we got a second one for a couple of reasons, namely that I passed my driving test, and that OH's car is totally impractical. It's a two seater with no boot space and costs a fortune in fuel. We use the second one to go shopping or if we're going to need to take passengers or any quantity of luggage anywhere. We also use it for long journeys as it's more economical on fuel.

We're thinking of getting rid of one because we've found ourselves living in the city centre so we're both walking to work, but the freedom of us both being able to go off and do our own thing last year was brilliant.

We have four cars between us. I have my own personal car that I use for work and running around without the kids and H is the same with his own personal car.

We then have a 'family' car that is used when the three of us are going out or if we have to take our son anywhere. H also has a classic car that he uses sometimes in the summer but on the whole its normally sits under covers in our garage. He also has a motorbike which is pretty much used the same.

we only have the one, but my parents have two. They used to both drive to work (now my mum drives to work and my dad is semi-retired, does a lot of work from home, but does drive during the day to see his clients/customers/people he works with, plus various other things). Then they use my mums small car (clio) for weekend shopping, and my dad's large estate for longer trips (it's far more comfortable) or for going to the tip (they seem to do this a lot), or for buying large things, or for going away (more boot space).

We had 2 cars until we moved to our new house 2 years ago then I gave mine to my Dad because we could travel to work together. Now my job has changed I'm looking to buy a second car because we both need one for travelling during work time. If we go out together we'd probably still use his car because it will be a better car.

When we both commuted into London we only had one car as we would go to the station together.

Now I'm home with the kids we have two cars but hubby does try to cycle to the station when it's nice weather.

We have 2, but one is a van-does that count?

I take the car to work and it's also used for all other 'stuff' - shopping, travelling, holidays etc. H's van is essential to his job as he carries a lot of computer gear about and travels about a lot working in many different places. It's also very handy for trips to the tip, visits to Ikea etc

I never thought I'd be married to a white van man.....

I'm on maternity leave at the moment so I need my car to do anything during the day. When I go back to work we'll have to make sure one of us can leave work on time to pick our daughter up from nursery on the days we're both working so again we'll need both cars (we work for the same company in the same department and it's not unheard of that we may get caught up in an urgent issue).

Generally if we go anywhere we take my H's car, but if I need to drive at all we take mine as I'm a bit scared to drive his, much more powerful, one. We'll also use mine if we're going anywhere even slightly dodgy or suspect or if we know there's a small car park as my H would be annoyed if anything happened to his car. It's not that special or expensive, he just really likes his car although not in a freaky documentary way!

we've just aquired a second car, having survived with 1 previously. i cycled to work, H has his company car, and when it rained or i was feeling lazy, he would drop me off. he's moved jobs now and works father afield so we've had to buy me a car. i drive to work. drive home at lunch to see the dog, then drive back to work. That's all it gets used for , as we will use the company car at the weekend. I'd rather not have 2, but with H's new job we need them now.

We have 2 cars, I use mine to get to work and visiting friends etc at weekends. OH uses his to go to work but we do mainly use his at weekends but admittedly only because we don't have to pay for his petrol.

We have two cars. Mine is used to ferry the children around and get me to uni etc, my OHs car is used to get him to work if he's not cycling - most of the time it sits on the driveway. At weekends we tend to use mine as the general family car as although it's alot smaller (I have a Clio, he has an Audi A6) what with the petrol prices at the moment it's a lot cheaper to run.

    We have two cars.

My husbands is a company estate car (He's a field service engineer so is out on the road and has it to carry equipment etc).

And I have a small city car which I use to go to work and back, and to potter round in at weekends.

Thanks everyone - makes a bit more sense now. I was interested as when we bought our car we really struggled to find a car which was everything - economical, big enough to carry stuff/luggage/shopping, not too big so easy to drive around town and park, etc. It seemed that we needed two cars to fill everything (which wasn't going to happen when only one of us drives).

We have 2 cars, a van & a motorbike. I use my car for work, H uses his van for work. His car & motorbike are used purely for leisure. My car is used for some of the long journeys (it's a diesel), and if we're off to an airport, or whatever.

We had two cars for about 2.5 years - one reasonably economical, and one an estate.

About 6 months after I changed jobs we concluded that we could both get the train to work (work in opposite directions), and the soaring costs of tax and petrol meant it really wasn't worth us getting a second car, so we lost the estate.

95% of the time it was the right move - we just have to arrange who has the car if we need it for work.

The only problem we have is that we can't get roof bars on the hatchback (not even soft ones as it's on three doors and the back windows don't open), so moving surfboards and mountain bikes is proving difficult

We have three, only because our campervan is in the garage at the moment. I have one for work and Papa Smurf has an old Golf for running the children around as he is a househusband. Once the camper is back the Golf will have to go.

We have two. I work all over the South East, and H works in Gloucester, so we need one each.

At the weekends we drive 'mine' as H prefers it to his.

We have three really as we have a camper van as well. I avoid driving this ?

We're in the same boat as you, the only difference is my h2b does drive, we only have one car, we take it in turns to use it depending on who is doing what during the day, then who ever gets the car takes the other to work and picks them up or the one without the car walks, it works fine for us, it's encouraged me to walk more than i used to and i actually quite enjoy walking.

    We have 2 cars.

H and I work in different locations. I work close to the city centre and he works close to another city centre.

My car is used to ferry myself and little 'un to work and nursery during the week (his is used to ferry himself to work.) Then at weekends we'll use which ever car - sometimes both as we may be doing different things.

In our family we do both need a car each.

We have 2 cars and have had for the past year or so. We both commute reasonable distances to work (me 50 mile round trip, H2B 60) and in the opposite direction so use our cars for that. H2B could get the train to work but not to band practise which he has after work at least once a week and at the moment the car is still just about the same price to run as getting the train every day (according to H2B!).

At the weekend we tend to use my car, which is nicer (newer, more comfortable, air con, automatic etc) although recently we have started to use H2B's car a bit more because it's much more fuel efficient than mine. (These are not amazing cars, they're a Skoda Fabia and a Fiat Punto!)

It costs us a huge amount of money to run two cars, especially with petrol costs rising every day, and we'd have so much spare if we only had one car. At the moment and for the next year or so it still makes sense for us to have 2 cars but the plan is that once H2B finishes his pgce (he starts in September), one of us will get a job nearer to home (or we will move) and we will only have one car.

The only trouble is you really get used to the freedom of having a car each, and I can imagine that we won't quite get round to getting rid of the 2nd car - unless it dies and the choice is forced on us. I also think once we have children having 2 cars will be really invaluable.

We have 2 cars. We both work in different directions, niether has good public transport unless you want to get 3 buses lol. H also works shifts and most of the time im sleeping once he gets home. It is getting more and more expensive for the 2 cars, petrol alone is over £200 a month! If it does get a lot higher then we would need to look at cutting back to one, would be hard though after having the freedom of 2 cars for so long iykwim.

We have 2 cars as we both used to have to use them to get to work.

I changed my job at the beginning of the year and now use the tube to get to work so my car doesn't get used at all during the week. I did consider getting rid of mine as it's hardly used but there are times at weekends when we both go out seperately.

H uses mine sometimes now to get to work as it's smaller and cheaper to run.

We have two cars, I currently do a 60 mile round trip and back to work from home. H works around the area where we live. We had our own cars before we met and we havent' seen the need to downsize to one car just yet. H also plays cricket on a Thursday night and Saturday/Sunday so needs his car to get to the matches.

We have 2 cars. H's is an old L reg corsa that purely gets him to work and back.

I have a newish Zafira which is our family car. It gets my daughter and I from A-B, is used for shopping, H takes it if he goes anywhere with our daughter, I use it to get to my parents, we use it for family holidays and it is my car for work when I am not on maternity leave.

If I could use public transport to get to my parents then we could and would have 1 car. I can't though, it would be a 2 hour trip each way weekly on the train with multiple changes and I'd still need a taxi/parents top collect us the other end. One car could work well for us at H works 6-3 so I could use it for errands when he gets home at 3.30 each day. I only ever work when he is home as childcare.

I am using my car less at the sec due to the crippling fuel costs. I am paying nearly £1.30 a litre here (haven't filled up recently so it could be more)

We have two cars. We did have just one for a while but it was a nightmare! Trouble is we have 3 children and A (the biggest) does a few evening activities and then I go out as well, so trying to organise lifts was a right pita.

Now we have the old diesel we use the most as it's smaller and I can fit me and the children in fine. The big 7 seater we use when all of us are going out as it's a squash in the smaller car, and if we need to go to different places at the same time.
