Twothousandandten or twentyten?

Fimble, 7 June, 2009 at 17:55 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 19

Trivial question alert.....

What are you calling next year? I am having to refer it it on a daily basis when planning work stuff, but I can't decide what to call it.

We can't keep saying twothousandand for years and years can we... but twentyten sounds like a cricket match or something.

What say hitched?

Hmm, difficult! Instinct (or habit?) leads me towards 'two thousand and ten', yet when talking about the Olympics I've jumped on the 'twenty-twelve' bandwagon. Erk.

    Will watch this with interest...

Two thousand and ten at the moment, I'm sure at some point i'll switch to twenty ten, twenty twenty or whatever but it just seems a little odd after ten years of two thousand and....

I'm not going to start saying Twenty until 2012, I've decided. Twenty Ten and Twenty Eleven don't sound right but Twenty Twelve does. That could just be the alliteration though as Twenty Thirteen doesn't sound right to my ears so I may go back to Two Thousand and Thirteen. Hm.

Or I'll just go with whatever the BBC tells me. ?

Its going to be Two Thousand and whatever it is for me til the day I die. Twenty whatever it is just seems too Americanised for me. But then I have issues with the format that some TV channels are taking saying the date cos I think its too Americanised!

Its the 7th of June not June Seven argh! Anyway Im getting off my ranty soapbox now.

Really? Surely it just follows on from what we have always done? I don't remember anyone ever saying it was the year nineteen hundred and ninety nine, for instance. It was always nineteen eighty five, or nineteen ninety nine, so twenty ten, etc just follows on.

Twentyten, definitely, but twothosandandeleven - twentyeleven sounds daft. Twentytwelve is okay though.

I don't think the two centuries are comparable though. In the 20th century, if you were to say the year long hand you'd take forever - eg my birth year, 1978. Nineteen hundred and seventy eight would be 9 syllables so no-one would reasonably use it day-to-day.

Two thousand and ten is only 5 syllables. Twenty ten is 3. So they're comparible, imo.

Personally I think twenty-ten is too gimmicky, bit too catch phrase-y. I'll be sticking to Two thousand and.... until further notice.

Hmmmm, I hadn't thought past 2010 - TwentyEleven is rubbish isn't it. Looking at it that way I guess I will stick with Twothousandand until we get to 2020. Unless my children's school do it differently.

    Thanks all.

I shall be saying "two thousand and ten", just as I used to say "one thousand, nine hundred and niney-nine".

(Actually I'll probably do the same as Sophie)

We'll be stuck with twentytwelve anyway, because that's how the Olympics is being referred to.

As KN says, it makes sense for dates to be different from normal numbers.

but the year before nineteen-ten was nineteen-oh-nine, wasn't it? So they just carried on.

I'm guessing that in 50 years time, this year will be referred to as twenty-oh-nine, but nobody says that at the moment.

    2 thousand and 10.

I feel odd saying 20-10 (like I'm trying to be trendy or something!)
