'Txt speak' translation help

Loubie_Loo, 16 November, 2008 at 11:27 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

Hiya, really hope someone can help me here, I am doing an online job application and I have to do a short communication test. Part one is to translate a text message into a letter format with complete sentences and punctuation. I have got the gist of most of it but need a little bit of help with the middle part. Hope one of you is more 'wiff it' than I am and can help ?

The piece is:

Hi tom u r invtd 2 my prty on strdy nite pls brng btl presen 2 cds. Do u wana slepova tim

Ta x

    I would guess at:

'Hi Tom. You are invited to my party on Saturday night. Please bring a bottle, a present and two CDs. Would you like to sleep at my house? Tim'

Thank you so much Purple Pixie, that is what I would say too but I was a bit worried about changing the actual wording as in 'would you like to' rather than 'do you want to' IYKWIM, even though that sounds better.

    It is not very clear.

Although if they want a letter format, presumably they're after:

    Dear Tom

You're invited to a party at my house of Saturday night. Please bring a bottle, a present and two CDs.

Let me know if you'd like to sleep over.

    Best regards

    Tim

I can understand an employer wanting to see good use of English and good communication skills, but what if you can't understand the text message at all? I'd be stumped at the middle bit. ?

Why would someone tell you to bring two random cds? It doesn't make sense as a message. I would tell them that. Does this job involve dealing with texts a lot? If not, I would wonder at their sanity

Perhaps it just means a couple of CDs, as in some, rather than two specifically.

Well is it just me who thinks that Tim is a little bit cheeky asking him to take a present ? ?

That's what I mean, why would you ask someone to bring a couple of cds without saying which ones? They could bring any old rubbish.

I agree it's odd to ask for a present too.

It could be worse, he could be asking for money to help pay for the party ?

Perhaps Tom makes mix tapes Cds supreme? I have no idea, I'm so out of my depth here. Maybe kids just bring random CDs to a party? Surely it'd be easier to bring Ipods and plug em into the PC & speakers though?

    Exactly, cds are so 90s.

    I don't like this company's stupid recruitment nonsense ?

Hi all, trust me, it just got worse after that!

I had to work out how many rolls of wallpaper I needed to decorate a room, write a recipe and the worse bit, build a slope! Or at least work out what materials I would need to build a slope! Not one of my strong points I must say!

And the job I was applying for was..........

    part time travel agent!

My favourite job app/interview story concerns a well known american investment bank. Their london office recruited 3 grads a year, and received in the order of 15,000 applications. hundreds of first stage interviews were carried out. one of the "tests" was that the interviewer would show the grad into the office, ask them to sit, and then sit on the other side of a desk himself. then he d say to the grad "hm, bit warm in here, would you mind opening the window?"

so the grad would of course say sure, and got up to do same. only the window was fixed shut and impossible to open. they interviwed so many people that the response to the fixed window became the "filter" as to who was going to immediately go out of the recruitment process. of course the correct response was to try the window, and then immediately say it wouldnt open, but responses ranged from repeated attempts until sweaty ?, trying to find screwdrivers to pry it open ?, to one famous candidate who tried to smack the frame with a chair, and cracked the sill ?

Similarly, the SAS asks recruit to report to an office. When they get to site, there's noone in the gate house to let them through. If they can't make it as far as the office, they're out.
