Typographical/word design? Hitcher-in-business-to-be, maybe?

fancyfree, 17 May, 2010 at 20:33 Posted on Planning 0 12

Trusty hitched... I was thinking recently about wedding planning and I can't believe it's over! I had so much fun planning my own wedding, and the day was so happy I sort of don't want to leave it behind!

During the planning people really seemed to like the Order of Service front page I put together. On the day people also mentioned the order of service and other stationery bits and bobs. I work in publishing for my day job and I was wondering if I could combine the two and whether there was a market for word design/typography? I'd love to work for myself, even if only part time. My degree is in English and I do copy-writing so I could help people write their own introductory stories.

I did my Order of Service

and this past weekend I was bored (H working, my oven had exploded!) so I put together a collage of my favourite comments from our guestbook/cards etc.

Then I got to thinking I could do snazzy arrangements for people's sweetie tables and that sort of thing? Do you think it could work? Do you think people would pay to have something like that made for them?

    Hey ff,

You are one talented lady! I love your designs and I'm sure there would be a market for it - if I wasn't almost there, I'd definitely be in touch to organise something. Good luck!

Go for it! I love your work, its very unique and I'm sure there's a market out there for it - you could always start small and then see how you go. I'm planning to start a stationary little side business once I'm set up with some pre-made designs - you never know !

It's great! Really well put together, stands out well on the page but is still easy to read. You should definitely go for it. You should have a look into doing vintage signs etc. Have a look at etsy.com. There's loads of handmade stuff on there that'll give you an idea about set up and what sells etc. i think the uK version is called folksy.com but it's not as established as etsy.

I thought that your stuff was fabulous - I love the style.

You could make a whole range of things for weddings. Feel free to design away & give them a try on my website if you want, I am happy to help anybody along who is starting a new business in the same industry as me.

Fancyfree, your work is brilliant, go for it!! I think you'd get a load of business in no time & judging by the response here, it would def be worth being a HIB!

Wish I hadn't such a short time to go or I would've had you do something for us....suppose theres still after the wedding!!?

Hi Fancy free.....out of interest what software are you using as the letters look like they are kerned...which really makes a difference.

Thanks for the feedback - it's encouraging but scary too! Obviously if I want to start doing this for other people I need to set up properly and not just for my amateurish requirements. We're using a wedge of our wedding money to set up a proper computer system/office at home so that will definitely help! Peter: I'm self-taught on photoshop and was manipulating it that way to make the text kerned/fitting to what pleased my eye, but will definitely look at Illustrator if it's better for typography (thanks for that snap). Want to do it properly if I go through with it!

I was worried people might think their lives were uneventful, but it's surprising how much you can get out of a few stories. I thought I didn't have much to say (essentially, we met at uni, then moved around a bit) but managed to get enough material for our story. As I'm an English graduate and work in publishing and do copy writing and editing, I was hoping that I might be able to help tease stories out of people! I like punctuating the stuff with some choice lines from songs and poems too. I suppose it's a case of building up a bank of inspiration.

Could also do some 'set' posters like for sweetie tables as well as bespoke designs.
