Unconventional Wedding Reception... What do you think??

jimjams, 6 October, 2012 at 15:55 Posted on Planning 0 18

For various reasons my OH and I are trying to think of a way to have an unconventional wedding reception and I would love to know your thoughts on an idea?

A late ceremony (say 4pm), then back to the reception venue where there will be no formal wedding breakfast (this would be explained on the invitations) but instead tables set out as you would expect but in the centre an ice bucket with chilled champagne then three tiered trays of chocolate dipped strawberries, red and green grapes, gourmet cheeses, pate and pepparoni; basket of gourmet breads (french foccacia etc), with flavoured butters, lots of tea lights; and each place setting would have a plate with a napkin draped across, cutlery etc. We could then have toasts from our guests rather than more foaml speeches and move right onto the dancing and drinking.

There is a lot more to think about I know, but it'd be good for me to get some feedback... Any obvious flaws, or things you'd change or tweak?

I love it personally, I'd love it as a guest and as a host!

You might not be able to fit all the food on the tables though, as if you have 8 people on a table, that's a lot of food. Also, different people eat different amounts of different things - some tables might need more cheese for example, so maybe putting it on a buffet table where people can help themselves might be better?

What time of year are you getting married? Your food sounds like a kind of posh picnic, so you could even incorporate a bit of a picnic theme to keep in with it - gingham tables, baskets filled with flowers etc.

We're also having a late wedding so we only have to feed people once!

We're thinking of having the ceremony around 4pm I think, but we've still got a lot to think about fitting in before we firm that up.

I love the idea of the "posh picnic", that could really work into a theme, and hopefully although it's much cheap than a wedding breakfast it won't look cheap :-)

This could be something that could work I think :-)

Ooh yes Smiley winking We were going to do similar originally, but altered our plans slightly as picnics aren't generally associated with November!

    This was my original inspiration

I am on a v tight budget, and think if you haven't got much money, you should go quirky and different, as if you try and do 'classy on a budget' it comes off looking cheap.

It's a fun theme too and you could have tons of fun with it Smiley smile

OMG Thank you so much, I LOVE that!! :-) I knew this would be the place to help, that's wonderful!

And I completely agree about the quirky thing, I would rather look like I've tried to be different and be able to be creative with that than just try to have the traditional wedding and just have people see all the things that are missing and the corners that have had to be cut :-)

    I think I have a theme... Wooo! :-)

    Thank you xxx

    Hehe Yay!

Do as much as you can yourself - I'm sure family and friends would love to get involved (that's what we're doing)!

Sounds lovely. Just two things, not all venues allow tea lights so check, and anyone pregnant can't eat pâté or a lot of cheeses so you may need more options.

I'd love it as long as there was enough food. Maybe "refill platters" on hand if those on the table run out x

Great comments thank you ladies, I know we can do tea lights as I know the venue well and at present I don;t have any preganant guests on the list, but will be making sure there is a selection for veggies etc anyway... And also some meat for the men, my OH is a rugby player and he's be heartbroken if there was no meat... Or refill platters! Ha!

To be quite honest, I absolutely love the idea! If we hadn't found such an amazing deal with a sit-down meal, we would have possibly gone with something like this! Smiley smile x

I know exactly what you mean, I've felt that same feeling myself, especially if timings are off with the meal and you end up stuck there for hours when there are people all around the room you'd like to chat to!

I'm delighted its got such a good response, this is an excellent acid test just to be sure I've not completely lost the plot and everyone would hate it!!

Love the sound of a posh picnic. At my wedding I didn't really eat to be honest as I was walking round chatting the whole time as I didn't want to miss anything. I ate a mouthful of starter, just the meat in my main and barely touched my pudding. Luckily my new husband managed to polish it off for me.

Sounds seriously nummy. Making my belly grumble. You should have some jams too. I love jam on fresh bread, and don't even get me started on crackers and pâté!

I've heard a lot of Brides say this, and many guests too... Or complain the food wasn't to their taste... The feedback on here has been invaluable in convincing me this is the right choice for us :-)

We've decided now this is definitely an option for us, with an additional detail of all the walls being covered in dairy lights rather than having the conventional decorated room with flowers etc. with it being a more evening wedding anyway, we're imagining main lights off and just fairy and tea lights to light up the space, also cheesecake instead of wedding cake because its my favourite!! :-)

I'm now on the hunt for fairy light rental companies, have any of you got any recommendations?
