Unusual (and inexpensive) wedding favours?

Icklefee, 22 April, 2013 at 21:44 Posted on Planning 0 14

Does anyone have any ideas on this? I'm not really coming up with anything apart from little packets of seeds or a personalised paper bag with sweets. I'm having a vintage/shabby chic theme and wanted something that's appropriate to this.

I'm going down the craft DIY route, with a rustic theme. My mum and I are quite crafty, and she does pyrography (burning text/patterns into wood) so between us we're making little wooden fridge magnets with guests names on Smiley smile

Dont know if they are that unusual, but edible favours are always appreciated & never get left on the table. They are also cheap to make by yourself or any friend/relative with a mixing bowl & an hour to spare:

    - gingerbread or biscuits in any shape. They can also be iced with guest names & double as a place name

    - fudge, marshmallows, toffees, toffee apples, peanut brittle, turkish delight, brownies, caramel popcorn balls on stick (infact anything stuck on a large skewer would be a bit unusual)

    - Jams, chutneys, jellies

    - oils or vinegars infused with rosemary, chilli, garlic, basil, pepper or mint

    - Chocolates. Melt large cadbury or toberlone, then add either nuts, glace cherries, coconut, bits of caramel or nougat then put into moulds

These sound amazing! I am not crafty in the slighest and haven't the time or patience to learn how to do anything. I did find little heart shaped seed packets that I thought I might be able to glue a fancy button onto without too much trouble (watch out for my post asking how to remove glue from anything and everything within 10ft of me) but other than that i'm stumped.

I attempted to make fudge once. One of my children announced the cat had been sick in my baking tray.

Hey Icklefee, I love the idea of unusual wedding favours, especially hand made ones. For a vintage/shabby chic theme what about hand made candles? Or cupcakes/cake pops - see Peggy Porschen's website for vintage style icing ideas. Chocolate coated honeycomb pieces are easy to make and yummy. We hand made truffles for my sister's wedding last year and I am planning on making mini gingerbread men for my Christmas wedding this year - fun to do with your family/bridesmaids and inexpensive.

we're making tealight holders out of old jars for table decor. Would it be really cheap just to invite all our guests to take one as their favour?

Not as far as i'm concerned - if I were a guest i'd just assume that was the whole purpose of them in the first place, and they just happened to be lit for effect, rather than you were just giving away the table decorations! I think as a guest you should be grateful for any gift you are given, and it should be a memento of the day, so that sounds perfect to me.

Besides, someone always goes off with some of the table decorations at weddings - you may as well make them a legitimate gift!

Our daughter had Lush soaps which came ready wrapped with a printed label showing the date of the wedding etc. They had a mixed selection of gents, ladies and sensitive ones. I know the 'Lush' smell isn't to everyone's taste but, if you do like Lush, the room was a fabulous smell when you walked in! We added the black organza ribbon to attach the tag. This was theirs:-

I love this idea, did you make the labels yourself or did lush print them for you? Can I ask how much did they roughly work out at each?

Hi - Lush printed the labels and we just tied them on. I'm not sure exactly how much as the Groom's Mum and Dad paid for these but I'll hunt for their website and let you know! They also do wedding cakes in slabs of soap too - shame you can't eat it though Smiley sad !

Sorry - I can't find a UK site with the prices on but I found this:-

Apparently you can order them in the shops as well and they will post them to you. If you're worried about the smell being overpowering, ours smelled lovely when we walked in the room but after a while, you couldn't notice it as much and it didn't put anyone off their food that's for sure!
