Unusual venues!

dearbarbie, 29 November, 2013 at 12:55 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hello - newly engaged here!!

Looking for venues that are ideally not a hotel, or a stately home - anyone know of any?

Am based in Surrey, happy with Surrey, Hampshire (bf's home) or Yorkshire (where I'm from) and want 100 ish guests. Ideally ceremony in same place (civil) but will defo consider venues not in our locales...Found some lighthouses but they only do tiny ones argh.

Google isn't bringing much up!!

Have you looked at Bolton Castle in North Yorkshire? https://boltoncastleweddings.co.uk/

    Or Yorkshire Sculpture Park? /hire/weddings

    York Maze: http://www.yorkmaze.com/pages/weddings_and_private_hire.html

    The Bivouac: http://www.thebivouac.co.uk/weddings_and_groups

I can't help with Hampshire way, I'm afraid! Smiley smile

ETA: I've not been to weddings at any but I considered Bolton Castle for my own wedding.

Http://www.royalmarinesmuseum.co.uk - In Portsmouth, Hampshire. It's a lovely venue and the beach is literally like a 2 min walk!

http://www.tithe-barn.co.uk - This venue is really cute Smiley smile

http://www.petershamnurseries.com - This venue looks ahhhh-MAZING! It doesn't have a great deal of photographs on the site for weddings, and I think they've only recently started taking on weddings. But you can see more photographs of it set up at: http://www.mrandmrsunique.co.uk/venues/petersham-nurseries.aspx

Not too sure if any of those help as I'm not 100% sure what you're after.

The lighthouse idea sounds absolutely amazing! What a shame they can't accommodate for a bigger party.

    Hi Dearbarbie,

We have so many different venues on site, you can browse here: https://www.hitched.co.uk/wedding-venues/

I also recently did a blog on unusual wedding venues in Hampshire, it might help...https://www.hitched.co.uk/chat/blogs/planwithfran/page/20131010/zoe-visits-three-unique-venues-on-the-south-coast.aspx

    Good luck with your search!

Thanks everyone! Great suggestions - I do like the idea of getting married on a pier too, I want a wedding that's not traditional in any sense - prob won't even have a bouquet made from flowers. Will check out your suggestions - I have checked this site already and nothing came up that fit the bill that we've not seen already...

We're going to here tomorrow for our first-ever venue viewing - so excited!

Also going to order engagement ring!! WOOO!

    Hello,

Sorry if i am too late but i am looking for a venue with a difference too! I have looked at East Riddlesdon Hall (Keighley, Yorkshire), York Maze which is lovely but out of our budget although it may be worth a look as the freedom they offer is great. Thackray Medical Museum (Leeds) has also started doing weddings if you want something really different!

or you could use Papa Kata tipis and find your own venue space??

We wanted a totally unique venue too and have chosen an organic farm with Victorian walked garden with giant tipis instead if a marquee. Accom is yurts, tipi's and a barn, and luckily there's a few b&b rooms on site for the parents Smiley smile
I'd advise looking at self catering party houses, barns, farms, and b&b's x

If you're Surrey-way I'd assume you have easy enough access to London? probably plenty of unusual venues there, you can get married on a boat somewhere in Wandsworth I believe (not 100% sure you can have the ceremony on it).

We had our reception here: http://landmarkartscentre.org/about-hiring/wedding-receptions.html not sure it's unusual enough, definitely not a lighthouse! but it's definitely not a hotel or stately home either. Probably a bit big for your numbers though. I suspect your numbers will prove a sticking-point as unusual venues *tend* to cater for either very small or very large weddings (e.g. the Natural History Museum does weddings, I soooo would have if we'd had that kind of money! my parents went to a big wedding there and said it was incredible!).

I would start by finding the list of licensed venues in your area, and just eliminate the venues you don't like.

We were exactly the same... "normal" just didn't do it for us. So we're getting married in a distillery!
