Update on me & the 'applying for job if not qualified' saga`

Mrs Roo, 2 July, 2008 at 14:58 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

For anyone who might be interested....I managed to get in touch with a very nice person in the council and have had several email conversations, but the long and short of it is they've had 100+ applications (already, deadline isn't for a fortnight yet!) and so the 'essential' qualifications will be taken as that - so I wouldn't even have mine read beyond that point. Hohum. That's how it goes I guess. I'm gutted, but I've been reading and reading since seeing the job advert and the more I've read the more I know I want to do this or something similar. So I need to get qualified. So I'm checking out OU courses to see what I could do, to fit around working and the kids so I know it won't be easy, and it'll mean another year or two of waiting but then I'll be in a position to apply for similar jobs (here's hoping they have some!). I'm trying not to be too down, I think it'll hit me tonight, but at least I now know how to get where I want to be, so I've just got to switch focus to that. I never thought I'd find myself taking MORE qualifications (how many bits of paper can one person have??? It's mad!) but there we go. Course work and exams - here I come (again!!).

Thanks for the advice and support on the previous thread, much appreciated.

well, at least you got hold of the right person and you know how competitive the job is! Good luck in the future.

Is there any way you could train and work at the same time (I mean in the sam field)? It was a childcare qualification you needed wasn't it?

It seems not CB - basically anyone without qualifications already will just be binned from the start. There are 13+ posts, hence the number of applications, but fingers crossed it's something that's not going to go away so will be openings in the coming years as well. I'm also going to do some voluntary work through Home Start, if I can, as that will give me some direct experience as well. Just trying to figure out what sort of qualification is best to go for and will fit with the fact that I'm not actually in an Early Years setting at the moment. I'm determined I'll get there in the end!

I was meaning get a job working in Early Years somehow, as an assistant or something, and do the NVQ at same time?

My friend retrained as a TA. She did the level 2 whilst continuing with her normal admin job, then managed to get a job in a school while she did her level 3.

    WCBS

My SIL worked as a nursery assistant while doing her NVQ level 2 and is now qualified.

Don't give up on that job yet though, if it's a council job they have to score every application so you might still get through if you score highly enough on the other areas ?

how long would it take you to fill out your application form anyway? Okay, so they've got over 100 applications... but how many of them will have all the essential qualifications? It might be 100 or it might be 20. And how many of them will have typing errors, be speculative applications, or just be plain wrong for the job.

I'm of the mind it's always worth putting in a form. If it goes in the bin, all you've lost is an evening of your time.

but on the other hand... how exciting to have that focus. Brilliant!
