Upgrades

*Funky*, 22 April, 2012 at 13:54 Posted on Planning 0 9

I was looking at inspiration for honeymoon destinations recently and then my friends asked if we would be flying first or business class.....this is something i had not even thought about i know most people go the extra mile to make their honeymoon special but had not even thought about extending this to the flights....sadly my budget usually only stretches to economy class which isn't the most pleasant on long flights and not a great start to the honeymoon arriving all tired and groggy.

Whats everyone else doing with regard to honeymoon flights?

Are you treating yourself to business or first class?

Do honeymoon packages usually include upgraded flights?

Did any of you OM's receive a free upgrade on check-in when staff learned you were travelling on honeymoon? or were any of you brazen enough to ask for one?

I'm not sure I would pay the difference for business or first, tbh. I do know that it's possible to be bumped up free of charge in some cases, if the flight has space up front, and if the airline lets you do it day-of. I don't mind economy class, but business is lovely, especially for a long flight. If you're flying far, why not just ask at the check in counter if it's possible to be upgraded, as you're on your honeymoon! If they won't do it, I suggest sleeping pills Smiley smile

We won't immediately be going on a honey-moon due to both our professional commitments. However, when we do go, we plan to use the points we've accumulated with Virgin to upgrade from economy to first class. We've been saving up the points for a while now, including by getting Virgin Atlantic credit cards, which give you extra points based on your use.

I've never heard of honeymoon packages including free upgraded flights, and rarely have I heard of someone getting an upgrade at check-in anymore, though it can never hurt asking. A friend of mine told me his bride carried her bridal bouquet with her to and from Hawaii in hopes of "subtly" alerting the flight attendants to their newly married status -- but alas no upgrade.

Only time I've ever had a free upgrade was when I had a wee moan to the staff that my partner and I weren't sitting together, worked a treat! I couldn't justify the extra cost of an upgrade but I'll always ask in case there are free ones going. Don't ask, you don't get.

I got upgraded when i burnt the soles of my feet in Thailand (very painful-long story)

After walking through the airport like a penguin (most embarrassing) I was dreading being cramped up on the plane but the nice guy on the desk took pity on me and upgraded us! Maybe that's the answer walk through the airport like a penguin. LOL

I told them at check in we were on our honeymoon and automatically got an upgrade to BC. Worth a try!

Our flights are almost 11 hours each way, I've got long legs so we upgraded our flights to included extra room, entertainment, meals, drinks etc... What they called the premium package.

We aren't regretting it at all, it we also upgraded things for our honeymoon. After all it's meant to be a one time deal.

We booked economy flights and mentioned at check-in for all our flights (7 in total) that we were honeymooners. We got upgraded once out of those, so it is worth trying if you want to. You don't lose anything by asking!

We're also not going on honeymoon until 6 weeks or so after our wedding. My OH tried telling me, "it's a holiday, not a honeymoon" and wouldn't let me mention it when booking hotels (we're doing our own thing, not a package). I have said to him I'm saying we're on honeymoon when we get there to see if they give us any extra freebies or upgrades but I'm def not expecting a flight upgrade as we're flying with Monarch!!

Oh I also said that I would be going ALONE if he said it was just a holiday...

Doing a business-class package for your honeymoon is not too expensive - we're looking at Trailfinders at the moment because they do honeymoon packages to Thailand and Sri Lanka for around £1600per person with business class flights and a week at a luxury resort. Very decent and maybe getting upgrades to First from Business may be a bit easier??
