Urgh, I am feeling queasy with nerves - updated

SophieM, 31 August, 2008 at 15:40 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 27

We've doing the Nike+ 10k this evening. Why oh why couldn't they start it in the morning so one wouldn't have to hang around gibbering with tension all day? ?

Ggggaaaaahhhh, that was hideous. Hideous. Utter shambles. We got there as requested for 6, and waited around for over two hours while they did a "concert" (which was completely random imo, although I concede some may have liked it) then annoying hypy warmup for wave 1, which eventually got off at about 7.30. We were in wave 3. They got us down into the stadium to get ready to start at about 7.45, by which point it was pissing with rain. Then they announced that (wooooo!) our warm-up would start in about 15 minutes. It was about 8.15 by the time we started. The course was awful - really boring, way too narrow, ill-lit in some parts (as of course by now it was pitch dark, and still chucking it down). It was impossible to pass anyone. Because it was so crowded, dark and everyone *had* to wear the same shirt, it was really hard to keep together. The course had loads of really deep pubbles which were bringing a lot of the runners to a complete standstill. We did the first 5k in over 30 minutes. The water station was a mess - it was so crowded that it was impossible to drink because you were getting jostled constantly. It was only by about km 6 that things thinned out enough to be able to run almost properly. We finished in about 58 minutes I think. Finish was total chaos too and the promised medals didn't materialise. They also promised that we'd be running in "dusk", not pitch dark.

Never, ever again. LOML was slagging it off on Fetch before he even showered ?

Good luck Sophie - you'll do great I am sure.

Mr R has his first 10k next Sunday - it's in the morning - and he's already fretting about sleeping through his alarm and missing the start!

Good luck - sure you'll be absolutely fine. Unless you've spent a long lunch in the pub, in which case perhaps you should walk round ?

Sounds more like village fun day organisation than a proper event ?

Well done you though, must have been really frustrating not being able to go at your own pace without the jostling and distractions.

    ?

    I can only aspire to a 10k run - currently i'm struggling to finish a 5k in 40 minutes.

    Gah, sorry to hear that.

I had a similar experience with the first Nike race - I am very very very slow admittedly and thus in the last batch out and waited HOURS to start. If you're staggering the race, why not stagger the arrival too?

And I wasn't anywhere near last and I wasn't pleased to arrive at the finish in the dark and cold to discover that there wasn't any foil blankets left in random park where the race finished or in fact anything as the staff had gone off home.

Really shoddy - I'd thought they'd have improved but it seems not...

Oh Sophie, that sounds utterly horrendous. You're a better woman that me as I think I would have pissed off half way through the concert! ?

Was it for charity? Who did you run for if it was?

Well done ... you did well to even start (under those circumstances) never mind finish

That sounds awful and one of the reasons I get put off entering 'bigger' events

pah to them and they should get themselves better organised!

well done for doing it in under 60 even with all that though!

What a bummer Soph - a guy in my team did it and has said pretty much the same as you. It sounds as if the start waves were a complete shambles. Good time though - sub 60 is always good, and you must have done negative splits for the second half. Let's hope the Royal Parks half is better organised!

Sounds like a right nightmare, weather, timing and general organisation wise so even bigger well done to you and your man for getting round the course despite all the adverse conditions, you've done fabulously!

The more I hear about these 'big' races the more I am glad that I am usually running in small, local run things. A nice sub 60 though in what sounds like pretty horrific conditions.
