US Hitchers!

CJJ, 9 June, 2009 at 14:42 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

We're now 'legal permanent residents'!! Letter arrived yesterday, cards to follow in the next 3 weeks.

My, that was fast!

H is nervous about telling one of his colleagues from India who is still waiting for his after 2-3 years...

Oooh, Congratuations! Welcome to the short line at the airport!

Does this mean that you are free to work if you want? Or have you become rather accustomed to the life of leisure?

How's Concord? Did you move yet?

Gingey Wife - I have no idea what changes! But it means that if H loses his job (not that that is likely to happen, but still!) we won't have to pack up and leave the country!

bostongirl - I got my EAD through a few weeks ago....but have definitely become accustomed to the life of leisure ?. However, if the BT plan doesn't work (not sure how many more tries we're going to manage) then I'll be rethinking my career plans.

Concord is good, we've been here about a month now. H is loving his commute! And we're enjoying the house (it backs onto the Assabet, so the views are fab but the bugs are annoying ?). H has been travelling for the past few weeks, so now I think we can start trying to settle in properly and get to know some people in the area.

Yay CJJ! Great news! We've got our own little kleek lol ?

How long did yours take? Ours took 6 weeks which is just madness. We're now in the middle of going through our first US house purchase as we have to move now we'll no longer be on an Expat basis. Exciting getting a brand new home. Not so exciting having to pay for everything!! ?

Peaches, I think ours took about 6 or 7 weeks as well (from the date of the biometrics appointment - we've been sitting on the original forms since about this time last year!) I was expecting it to take a lot longer.

We were never here on an expat basis, so have always had to pay unfortunately ?

It's one of my favourIte things too but when I came through Chicago last month they'd move legal residents to the visitors' line and took my finger prints. It's made me mad enough to almost consider citizenship (dual of course).

    Congrats CJJ

Congrats! I was so pleased to get mine (but more pleased to finally get my 10 year NJ driving license - no more alien visits to the DMV!).

They took my fingerprints last time I came back, and that was in the Citizens/Residents line too. I don't understand why that is necessary, and it's skeevy putting your fingers where someone else just had theirs..

Peaches, congrats on the house - I saw your post about it a while ago, but didn't reply. Good for you.

Congrats CJJ - how have you done it if you don't mind me asking. As I posted the other day its something we'd like to do but after reading up on it it just seems impossible.

My H got a transfer with his work (he previously worked in the UK office of a US company and got the transfer to their head office). Luckily the type of visa we were on made it very straightforward to get our Green Card.

Unfortunately, unless you get an international transfer with work or marry a US citizen, it is practically impossible to move over here.
