Ushers - do i need them and what do they do?

hellyf, 24 May, 2008 at 20:30 Posted on Planning 0 11

As the subject says really, my h2b doesn't seem bothered about whether he has them or not, i think it might be nice to ask his little brother, but is it the type of thing an 11yr old does?

Thanks

xx

Ushers usually assist wit getting people to their seats and helping move people from ceremony venue to reception venue.

It depends how many guests you're having and how formal and traditional your day is whether it is necessary to have them. While it is a nice idea to have your H2B's young brother as an usher, I doubt he will be able to fulfil all the traditional duties without help.

same number as ourselves, we are having 3 ushers, (my brother and 2 of OH mates) they hand out the Order of Services, seat everyone and can even escort particular guests back up the aisle if need be. They are kinda like the bestmans right hand men too, carrying out duties when asked.

My h2b wasn't bothered about having ushers either but we had our first formal meeting with venue and they said that they "need" him to have two ushers to seat the guests and make sure they are all in the room with the doors shut when I go into see the registrar, now he is a dilema of who to choose.

We're not having any, I don't think there's any need for a small civil ceremony

We didn't have any in the traditional sense. We had just 35 to the ceremony and no separate evening guests, and the whole thing was in the same venue (which we all stayed in for the whole weekend) so people pretty much knew where to go and what to do. H sister (who I tried to have as a BM, but it just didn't work out) took on the role of an usher, directing people to their seats and handing out the wrong button holes, and that was more than enough!

    Hello,

Were having 2 ushers - one from my side of the family (my BIL) and one from H2B side of the family (his cousin).

We've got around 100 people coming to the day and then possible another 100 to the the evening!

They will be getting people on and off the coach we've laid on for them, handing out the OOS and showing people to their seats!

We're having them as we have a lot of people to orgainise onto a coach from a hotel round to the Church and then onto the reception venue!

For us everything is happening in the same venue and there are only three rooms (other than the bedrooms) so its pretty obvious where to go! I have plenty of uncles with booming voices if anyone requires direction!!

    Hi everyone,

thanks for the replies ... i'm still undecided arrrghhh, prob will ask oh if he has any close friends he wants to take the role, we are having our whole day at the same venu so not sure if they really will be needed but i'm sure they will be handy if anyone can't read the table plan, eg relatives without their reading glasses!

    Thanks for the help

    xx
