Ushers - Opinions Please

BudgetBride2011, 6 May, 2011 at 08:30 Posted on Planning 0 4

So H2B is having 2 ushers (no best man). I'm not bothered about the suits matching, infact I would prefer if they didn't. H2B was going to hire his suit but I've seen one that I think he would really like but it's £199. I do think if I'm having a new dress, etc then surely he should be able to have something nice or the day and I know he would really love his own suit but then what do we do with the ushers? Neither of them have a suit already so it woul be a case of buying one or hiring one. I'm not sure if we've got it in the budget to pay for it but then if we buy H2B one and one thy costs so much is it not out of order that we'd then ask them to pay for theirs. I feel a bit mean about it...?

If your budget allows you to buy the ushers suits, then do so; if it doesn't, then they use (or get) their own - particularly if you aren't bothered about them matching.

Some people like everything to be matching, others don't; there is really no right or wrong answer at the end of the day.

You can buy relatively nice suits for about £40 in Tesco (or it might have been Asda?) if they aren't really "suit wearing people" normally.

I have a suit in the wardrobe but unless it decides not to fit nearer the time then I'll just be using that, I don't feel the need to spend out silly amounts of money (custom made you can spend over £1000) on something I'm really not going to use a great deal - my job just doesn't require it.

What does your h2b want to do? If you aren't bothered about him having a new suit, and he isn't, then you have nothing to stress over!

A £40 suit will look ok just as much as a £150 dress will look, against a £1500 dress.

A lot of people buy in to the misconception with weddings that more money must equal a better day - it's a lie.

£40 isn't bad really, we're doing the whole thing on a budget but my H2B is a bit of a snob when it comes to clothes and he is under the impression the more you spend the better it is which I disagree with. Also H2B would quite like the suits to match though. I think I feel bad about the ushers as well as one has a long term girlfriend (who neither of us have met) but I'm not sure if we're have room for her, we've said she can come to the meal onwards but we're limited to number for the ceremony so I kind of feel like we keep saying no to things and when he's asked them to be ushers I feel bad that they then have to spend out money.

Most of us have to do our wedding "on a budget", often without any parental help - the only difference really is the size of the budgets!

Our ushers are using their own suits, but we've bought the bridesmaids dresses and are paying for their hair/makeup etc - which seems to be fairly normal.

Are there any ways that you can cut back otherwise to release funds to pay for suits?

Just out of interest, what price range was your dress?

I hate matchy weddings. My Dad, H2B and best man are all wearing the same suit and we are just buying the ushers matching ties and button holes.

My £200 dress will look just as good if not better than the £1,200 version rather than OK as not only is it the same but I'll be happier that i didnt spend the money.
