Using a guest as a caterer

mustard_mitt, 19 May, 2014 at 20:14 Posted on Planning 0 6

About 6 months ago my friend started a catering business and by all accounts it's going well so far. She's fully trained and certified and has catered for several birthday parties and corporate events and the feedback has been very positive.

Fiance and I been talking about the reception food and what we can/can't afford and she popped into my head as a potential caterer. I'd obviously love to support her fledgling business by giving her the opportunity but primarily she's a guest, not a supplier. We've been friends for 15 years and I don't want her to think we're only inviting her to do the food. I mainly want to invite her and her husband to our wedding.

The easiest thing for us is to just source the catering elsewhere, but I really want to help her out if I can and throw some business her way (or at least offer it to her) but is this a good idea or a bad idea in your opinion? I've not mentioned this to her at all, I just want to hear opinions really. If you've used friends or relations as suppliers how did this work for you?

Could she do the cake? Or the evening food? I imagine the caterers would be too busy to attend a wedding as a guest.

I think your best bet is to discuss this with your friend. If she can still enjoy parts of the wedding, it might be great advertising for her business. Just bring it up lightheartedly and see what happens x

Hi, I just wanted to say it can work. My nan had a catering business and done the food for my parents wedding. The venue had a full kitchen that she could use and she had her own staff. I think many venues now though like you to use te in house chef.

I would defiantly talk to your friend, ask her if she would like to simply be a guest or if she could manage both and still have a good time. I'm sure she'll be drilled you even considered her even if she just wants to be a guest.

My stepdad is a caterer but I'm not using him, he is a guest and I want him to enjoy the day and not worry what is going on with the food. Plus he would struggle to get staff (I trust) because most of us are at wedding too.

id discuss it with your friend if your keen to use her, she may have plans that could be put into place so kitchen functions well without her.

Just say to her 'we just need to find a caterer now' when you have casual conversation, and if she REALLY wants to cater for your wedding, she will offer. We that had with our photographer, he is a mate of ours and building his portfolio - thankfully he is pretty awesome!!!

Along with what the others have mentioned about talking to her about whether she wants to cater or just be a guest, another thing to consider is whether her style and standard of food is definitely what you are looking for at your wedding? Involving friends as suppliers for a wedding can be tricky. On the one hand it could be the case that as this is a job for a friends she will really go the extra mile to make everything perfect and really personalise her menus and give you a great deal, but on the other hand I've heard a few tales on here about brides asking friends to be suppliers for their wedding and then finding it difficult to say when things aren't right/to their taste or standard for fear of damaging the friendship. Only you have the knowledge of how your friendship works and what confidence you have in her skills/business to make the call. I'm not saying I'd rule out using friends or family as a supplier, but I would think carefully about it.

^^^ this . I ruled out using an acquaintance for my photographer for the same reasons. If something goes wrong you will find it much easier to voice your concerns with a suppliers you don't know.
