Using crutches

alfie, 30 April, 2008 at 13:08 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

After falling down ths stairs and breaking a bone in my foot yesterday I am now trying to get around on crutches. However I just cant seem to get the knack of it so was wondering if some one could tell me how you use this things? No one at the hospitl told me anything about how to use them so I am just trying my best. However I have really sore upper arms and chest today which makes me think I am using them wrong or am I just really unfit thats why it is hurting so much.I did have heart surgery last month so are still really weak from that which is why H thinks I am so much pain.

You poor thing ? If you are weak/in pain from the surgery also maybe crutches will be a bit of a strain. Would a wheelchair be better to use too so you don't have to always have the crutches?

I was absolutely knackered the first couple of days using crutches. Felt like I'd had my ribs kicked in! It does wear off, but try and take it easy until you get used to them. It's just using muscles that you don't normally use.

I found using crutches really hard to start with (but then I am hidiously fat with wimpy arms). Lifting you whoel body weight on your arms is something you generally just aren't used to. My nahds were so sore too.

H was on crutches this time last year and I remember the first week or 2 he was aching too from using them but it did get easier.

[B)] to the hospital though - H got a full crash course on them!

Hope it gets easier for you.
