using poetry on stationery

melodrama, 28 September, 2009 at 21:20 Posted on Planning 0 4

Hi all, I'm new so please be nice ?

We're still in the planning stages - still haven't set a date for definite yet as we need to set the budget (will a tenner get a nice wedding?!)

Am thinking about stationery and particularly using poetry, in whole or in part...Not sure about readings - nobody we know would be happy reading a load of slushy lurve poetry in front of a crowd and I'm not sure how I'll be at speaking on the day (might get very tongue tied lol). So I thought about choosing bits of poems to put on stationery as I will be making my own if possible. But I'm not sure about copyright laws etc - How likely am I to get 'done' if I stick a couple of stanzas onto my invitations?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Mel

    You arent selling the invitations, you are giving them to guests so you could pretty much use anything you like! A nice shakespeares sonnet would be lovely on an invitation, in part....but thats just me being all theatrical as usual Smiley smile

    As far as I know if you are doing them yourself than there should be no problem about putting the poems on there, I used a poem on my wedding scrolls for my wedding, and all I did was put the authors name in smaller writing underneath and also a lot of older poetry is out of copyright as far as I am aware.

    Also hello and good luck with planning your wedding.

    Hi Mel,

    The short answer is you are not likely to get 'done' at all. I've never heard of anybody being sued by using poetry extracts for wedding stationery or anything similar.

    The long answer is that it depends whether the poetry is 'in copyright' or not. In the UK copyright lasts for 70 years after the authors death. So most older famous qoutes and poems are fine, Shakespear, Byron, Shelly etc. Whilst if you choose something more recent technically you need the authors permission to use it unless they gave it something called a 'creative commons licence' which allows others to use it for certain things (normally non-commercial use).

    You're welcome to use any of the poems or qoutes on my site PhotoLoveLetter.com, you will find them in the 'poem picker', all the material has been checked out for any copyright issues, just cut and paste the bits you want.
