Utter panic has set in and I have no one I can vent to!

elemden, 20 February, 2015 at 20:35 Posted on Planning 0 12

Sorry all,

This is my first post and is cos I have been hit by a wave of sheer panic.

I'm getting married on 25th April 2015 after my h2b proposed at the end of November 2014. It has been a complete whirlwind of planning which is pretty well all done now...BUT...I am having major doubts about my dress. I bought my dress early on the planning. I had intended on a tea length short sleeve retro type dress but was persuaded in the shop to try on a strapless long and full skirted lace and tulle dress complete with train. I cried as soon as I put it on as it is so beautiful (as did my sister) and knew it was 'the dress'. My problem is that now I am having doubts. By the wedding I will be 42, it's my second wedding and is being held in a beautiful country house venue (Somerford Hall). I can't help but worry that my beautiful beautiful dress is too over the top for the circumstances. I can't speak to my mum or sister as I feel I've become a wedding bore and I know the answer is that it only matters what I think of the dress, but I really need some words of support.

Thank you all in advance.

From your description it sounds lovely and would fit in perfectly with your beautiful country house.

Its normal to have dress wobbles but Im sure you look gorgeous in it, plus it made you cry! Thats a feeling that is wonderful to have.

Your beautiful dress was designed for the exact situation you plan to use it for; a wedding! Who cares how old you are or how many times you've done it before, you're marrying the man you love, nothing is too big or too small for that. Be proud of your dress!

I too had dress wobbles as I bought my dress before he been proposed! (I'm not a total psycho, I knew he was going to and it was being sold at a third of the price as shop was closing). But it was only one I tried on. However, I have since tried on others and thought maybe I should have changed, but upon visiting the seamstress my mind was put to rest and it flattered my figure.

Your dress sounds amazing - it made you cry, that is an incredible feeling. So please don't think you are being silly - doubts are normal, it's just your brain keeping your heart in check.

I'm 42 and I had a full on wedding dress and I loved it - I felt wonderful and weddingy - which is what you want to feel ultimately. Your dress made you cry - that's the dress for you, no wobbling!

I'd be happy to have a look at it if you have a photo? I'm very honest and will tell you the truth!

If you'd like me to have a look just send in a message via my Facebook page or website as the messaging system here at Hitched does not work.

Well I'm 55 and am wearing a full length Swarovski encrusted Maggie Sottero gown for my wedding in Snowdonia in less than 7 weeks. I had the same concerns when I first started thinking about what I could wear. I have had wobbles about my self confidence but I am wearing the dress I love and you should do the same. We are lucky nowadays, second, or third lol, marriages aren't restricted to dull outfits and registry offices. You can and should have the wedding you want be that simple and minimalist our big and bold, do it your way. You will look amazing if it's the dress you want. No compromises!

Just to echo what everyone else said - you knew. It's your wedding and you deserve to feel amazing. If you love the dress wear the dress.

And when you need to wobble, wobble here. Everyone is lovely and supportive.

I was going to post something very similar. I am 34 and getting married in a church. My dress sounds very similar to yours with lots of tulle and lace. I also cried when I tried it on and felt like the bride I'd always wanted to be. My worries are that I've been with h2b for 8 years and we have two small children - will everyone think I look silly and over the top because I'm not 22 and about to leave my parents home? Maybe some people will think that, but I have to remember that it is my wedding ( well his too!) and I should have the day that I want. I bet you look amazing and I can't wait to see the photos ?

That's just what I needed everyone. I feel so daft but have been close to tears for a couple of days. I think it was all brought on by taking my dress to be altered. I've lost some weight since buying and it needs quite a bit of altering. Standing in the dressmaker it was clear quite how much actual dress there is and I started to panic about moving round on my wedding day and whether it was all too much. I have ordered a dress for the evening reception which is a 50s retro number with lovely blue petticoats to go with the groom's suit...just wondering if I can get away with wearing my 'Mrs M' Adidas gazelles that I have also ordered!

It's been quite a week...I've also had hair and makeup trial. Hair I don't mind, I often wear it in a very similar style to what I wanted. However makeup I just don't do...at all. Sensibly I know I will need some to avoid photo washout and the make up lady was brilliant. It looked fantastic and really very natural, but (and I know this sounds odd), I found it stressful to have someone do it. I know on the day it will be so much less stress than trying to do something myself and end up looking like something from a kids party!

Thank you again everyone for the lovely supportive replies. 9 weeks and counting...plenty of time for more wobbles!

Aww, you're certainly not alone ?

I will be 43 when I get wed next year, for the second time, and last week I tried on a figure hugging lacy, blingy Maggie Sottero gown. And I'm getting married in a register office! Completely OTT? Probably lol, but things were done very differently first time, so this time round I want it to be VERY different. I felt and looked (pretty impressive for me to think I look good in something!) amazing when I tried it on, and it blew any thought of a simple dress right out of the water lol.

You love the dress, the venue sounds lovely, so you have nothing to worry about xx
