Vanity/looking in the mirror

Daffy B, 12 June, 2009 at 14:39 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

Slightly random musing...yesterday I was at work and decided to put on some lip balm. As I was doing so I realised that I hadn't looked in the mirror all day, and that it was about 11am. I had to go and look then just in case I looked terrible! It turned out I looked ok apart from the red wine stains on the lip from the night before...

I used to be really selfconcious (sp?) and was always looking in the mirror. Do you think you are vain, and how often do you think you look in the mirror each day?

Did you not look in the mirror when you washed in the morning?

Me- morning, evening and when I go to the loo during the day. If I'm wearing lots of make up during the day I might check it once or twice more (as messed up make up can be a bit grim) but I generally only wear a little bit so don't bother much.

I don't remember doing so, but I suppose I might have to check I didn't have toothpaste on my face! I didn't have makeup on the day before so I didn't have to make sure I washed it off, and I didn't put any on first thing so I just washed with an Olay wipe, brushed my teeth, showered, brushed my hair and I could feel that my parting was straight enough so I didn't look at that either. If it's a day when I'm wearing makeup I would have checked more.

An ex of mine once called me 'the vainest person he'd ever met'. I don't think he meant it in a bad way ?. Mind you, as his comment was generated by the fact that I'd brought a hairdryer with me to stay overnight, I think that may have been a little unwarranted.

I look in the mirror all the time, am constantly reapplying makeup and tidying my hair. It's not arrogance, though, it's down to insecurity 100%.

Mirrors, car windows, shop windows ... I'm continually checking how I look. Vain? Moi?! ?

    Me too ?

But I wouldn't say I am vain, vain to me means someone is conceited (sp?), and I am not that at all. I just like to check I am looking ok, hair is not messed up, make-up not smeared and I don't have anything stuck in my teeth ?

Ooh yes just to clarify, just because someone cares about how they look or checks their reflection a lot doesn't mean I think they're vain!

I think its one of those things that maybe you do as a reflex, so don’t remember it. I know I checked myself today (would’ve had to to do hair) but don’t actually recall it.

I look in the mirror for purely practical reasons- I never have a really good look at the way I look- to the point where I often don’t recognise myself in photos- but I’m a bit concerned once I start looking it will become an obsession (like the way you notice a roll on your stomach then can’t stop worrying about it)

What flailing wildly said...I look in the mirror loads, H is always telling me how vain I am but it really is about insecurity rather than anything else...I have to check I don't look too terrible whenever I get the opportunity!

I'm terribly vain - I have a full-length mirror in my classroom (not installed by me, I hasten to add) and I have to stop myself looking in it all the time. I don't know why; it's not as if I think I look particularly good.

Had a giggle at this thread....because i need to look in a mirror more often than i do.

I often come in from a gig at silly oclock, get the make up off quickly and roll into bed. We don't have a mirror in the bathroom...so a purposeful trip has to be made to the dressing table. Many a time i go all day looking like a panda!

I am the girl who is always saying 'I'm not being vain, I just have something in my eye' when I pull my compact out.

I haven't. I'm just generally checking my appearance. I'm not vain!

    Maybe. Ish.

Oh ***, I am terrible! I check my hair and make-up loads of times throughout the day. I am obsessed with my skin in particular. If I think I look wan/poxy I feel unsettled. I also do the thing with the compact-pretending I have something in my eye, to have a random check when in the company of others'. Even on my wedding day, I had a few surruptious checks-I've a small, antique compact which fits within my palm-sad I know!

I am shocking, borderline OCD, when it comes to looking myself in the mirror. Just as Flailing Wildy says though, it is not so much vanity as insecurity. I check for flaws rather than admiring myself. Lipstick/lipgloss is my second biggest obsession, I am forever reapplying it. ?
