Vegas baby

ForTheLoveOfMrsBrown, 27 November, 2012 at 17:17 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

Right, I am off to Las Vegas at the end of January. I have nine days with my Mum, my auntie and a family friend (aged 50-65, fully mobile but not exactly quadbiking-in-the-desert types). I have been given control of budget and organisation. Family friend has been several times and my Mum once - they spent their time doing the standard visit hotels/go to a show stuff.

I would like to have something organised for each day, a spa, a dinner whatever, and the rest of the time as we please. Recommend me restaurants/bars/activiteies/museums/whatever. The more unusual, the better. I also need a recommendation for a helicopter/champagne breakfast to the Grand Canyon.

We used Papillon for the Gramd Canyon tour, very reliable - not the cheapest, but cheaper if you pre book before you go.

    Places to eat...

Lemongrass in Aria hotel...best Thai I've ever had (caveat, I've not been to Thailand)

    Breakfast at Paris

The terrace point cafe at the Wynn also does fab breakfast.

    Cheesecake factory, natch.

Joe's and the Cut are great but meaty places so probs not great for you Footlong!

    Things to do

spend a day wandering the hotels for sure. The shows at Caesers palace and treasure island are fun.

    Gondola ride at the Venetian.

Not sure of any spas but imagine the spa at the Wynn would be FABULOUS. If not, just go there, for the smell. OT smells amazing.

For shopping, go to the outlet about 15 mins taxi ride away. Is fabulous.

Thanks. I am thinking of booking The Palazzo to stay in. Is that where the Cut restaurant is?

    Sure is. lovely hotel

We stayed at the Wynn, just next door.

OH is going in a couple of weeks and they're staying at THE hotel, which is part of Mandalay Bay. Think they got a room for £120 a night.

I second 'The Cheesecake factory', we had the early special (before 5pm) it was more than enough and delicious. We did the 'Maverick' champagne and picnic helicopter Grand Canyon tour.

We also used Maverick, no complaints, I’m just pleased we didn’t do any tours to the Canyon that where any more than few hours, it is very impressive don’t get me wrong but I did get bit bored after a while, so don’t waste a whole day on that.

We stopped in the Vdara, lovely couldn’t fault it, basically an apartment which has this view,

H wanted to visit the Hoover Damn so we managed to find out about this power pass http://www.visiticket.com/LasVegas/las-vegas-power-pass.aspx which included a tour to the Damn and also lots of other things, like zip wiring down Fremont Street, up the Stratosphere, Eifel Tower, Lions, Tigers and Dolphins at the Mariage and lots more.

If I had the chance to go again I would spend more time at Fremont Street as it just seemed to have a nicer atmosphere. Like others have said walk all the hotels, and you have to see at least one show, we went to Cirque de Soleil Mystere…. AMAZING!!!

Hs auntie went a few months ago and they went to see the Bodies exhibition and said it was a bit creepy but amazing and they were glad they had gone.

They also said just walking round all the hotels was amazing and just all the effort all the hotels went to is amazing.

We stayed in the Venetian which is linked onto the Palazzo - all rooms are suites and they are gorgeous.

This was our bog standard room:

We didn't have time to do a Grand Canyon tour so I'm afraid I have no recommendations there, but here's some of the things I'd recommend:

Spend an afternoon just walking up and down the strip, popping into all the themed hotels. The casinos are actually all much of a muchness, but it's nice to see the different themed receptions.

First thing you should do when you get to the Palazzo is go to the Grazie desk. If it's the same as when we went, you'll get a booklet of offers at reception (BOGOF cocktails, 20% off restaurant bills etc) and it should contain a $20, $15 and $10 "top up" for the casino card. We didn't know about this until we left, but basically you join a "club" and you get points for your stay, everything you spend in the restaurants and shops and every time you play the slots at the casino. So we got $45 worth of casino credit, which we just spent being silly on the slots.

Definitely watch the Bellagio fountains, but you've probably already got that one.

Go for a meal in Mon Ami Gabi in the Paris hotel. If you time it right, you can see the fountains, although they're a little obscured by some trees.

I know you're a veggie, but if your boy likes steak, go to Gallagher's steakhouse in New York, New York. Nothing fancy in terms of the restaurant, nor the presentation of the food, but an amazing steak.

My insider tip that someone told us when we were in San Fransisco, which I didn't see in any of the guide books. Go to the Wynn hotel and go downstairs to a bar called Parasol Down. You have to be smartly dressed and have ID. Really nice cocktails there but wait until 8pm for a "surprise". I won't tell you what it is!

Go to one of the buffet lunches. It's an eye-opener if nothing else. You'll see big fat Americans piling their plates with all kinds of different foods.

For a bar with an amazing view at night go to The Mix bar at the top of THEHotel in Mandalay Bay, fab views of the whole strip and yummy cocktails, I think they are half price between 5 and 7pm

I would really recommend the Neon Graveyard (Neon Museum/Boneyard). It's fantastic, the guides are brilliant and it's great to see all the old neon signs and hear their history.

OK, tonight is booking night. Boy is away, I have two bottles of white wine and I'm on the case. Here are my updates to convince people that I am a dynamic, uber-cool go-getter, rather than Bridget Jones.

    Booked: flights. Hurrah.
