Venue capacities and small weddings

wintersunday, 30 January, 2012 at 12:22 Posted on Planning 0 1

Hi all,

I'm trying to draw up a short list of venues to consider for our wedding (probably late December-mid January 2014 but TBC, in the north west). As I mentioned in my previous post, we're thinking about having a small (though not tiny) wedding- about 40 guests at most is our current educated estimate. We'd also like to have something quite formal, and all in one venue.

In looking at venues, most seem to have a capacity of considerably more than our numbers (which is understandable, the average wedding size is more than we're planning for). I know it depends on other factors, but is there a general guide to the capacity at which our numbers would look daft in the venue? (So 40 would look stupid in a room for 400- is the same also true of a room for 100, or 80?) Would it make a difference if we, say, kept tables set up for the wedding breakfast in half of the room and had the other half for dancing? I've already ruled out places which are upfront about minimum number requirements.

Thanks for reading.

My cousin had a wedding in a venue that could have held nearly twice her amount of guests, but what she did was have all the dinner tables set up in the room the entire night, with a large dance floor in the middle, so rather than move the tables to make room for dancing they had it all set up from the get go. They also had 8 people per table on tables that could easily have fit 10. There was still room at the sides, but I think it was fine. No one really paid any attention or seemed to care.

We had a similar dilemma. We only wanted an intimate wedding but with "necessary" family members being invited, our number has grown to 46 including ourselves. We have now booked our venue which fortunately caters for all size weddings.

Perhaps you should still view the venues with larger capacities that you really anyway but enquire as to whether they have more intimate rooms or even space for a small marquee?!

    Good luck! Smiley surprise)
