venue decoration - on a budget!

wishfulwhispers, 14 May, 2013 at 11:37 Posted on Planning 0 5

Morning Ladies - The family and I have been arguing back and forth about venue decoration since christmas! The wedding is now only 2 and a half months away (EEK!) and still no idea on venue decoration.

We've got a basic hall (http://www.scayneshillcentre.org/halls.htm) and i dont know how to (reasonably) decorate it.
I had a quote to do ceiling draping with little twinkly lights in but that was £495 - thats a little much when we're this late in the day.

I think my main concern at the moment is lighting - from the pic in the link you can see theres big football stadium style lights on the walls - i dont want these on. abit up from that you can see a strip light, which theres one on either side, again, not so mood setting. If i remember rightly from when i saw it theres also lights right up the top on the black beams, i dont think that has a dimmer otherwise would be pretty perfect.

We've ordered round tables and chair covers so everything else will be pretty white and a good blank canvas to then decorate I just cant think with what. Sashes on chairs will be pink, then a mix of flowers for centrepieces. Mum wants balloons, the ones with the little led lights in and dot them round the room, trouble is, having a 5 year old whose favourite thing in the world is a hellium balloon, i dont see them for anything other than a childs bday party.

I quite liked the idea of bunting but 1) dont know where to hang it from as the beams at the top are too high, 2) i dont think it goes with the hall. If the hall was abit more woody and rustic then it would be fine but its not Smiley sad and 3) that doesnt solve the light issue but is what i'm currently occupying my thoughts with lol

Help?

I am not a fan of baloons at weddings either, I agree they are for kids parties!

I don't think bunting would be out of place in that hall. you'd not need to string it from the ceiling, you could start it from half way up pinned to those pillars in between the lights, would only need to be high enough that no tall people would walk into it.

For lighting how about buying some of these uplighters:

Afterwards you could sell on or donate to the venue for them to lend to future wedding parties?

    Hi there,

I have just had a look at the hall and I think you could easily get bunting up there!! (maybe a tall relative who is happy on a ladder! hehe) Are you able to get in to the hall the day before?

You could easily make the ceiling draping with lights in. You could easily find some voile fabric online cheap (or ikea do a pair of very long voiles for £10 you could sew some together) hang copious amount of fairy lights off the beams along with the voiles!

Most importantly, do what you want!

More than happy to help do some online research for you if you like?

What about hanging lanterns with LED lights? We're having beachball lanterns; this company were really good and they're pretty reasonable:

    Thanks girls

i did originally want the hanging lanterns but was told by everyone they'd be too expensive so never explored further - i dont think they're badly priced at all actually. if i only need 50 then the shades and lights that last 36 hours are only £192.45 - that beats £495 hands down!

now to convince OH to go up a ladder....

Ha ha- it's only after looking twice at your venue I realised just how high the beams were! They could hang lovely and low and give a nice glow to the room, but getting them up there in the first might be...interesting...!

You're right about the price too, it's surprisingly reasonable. We got 10 beachball lanterns for about £30? (we don't need many- tiny venue) The little LED lights are surprisingly bright too. There might even be places you get get them cheaper- I just went to this place cos it's the first that came up on Google and I'm lazy!!

I was going to go with Lanterns aswell - my friend recently did this and it looked pretty wow factor! Also another friend hung different colour umbrellas?! Random but kinda fun!
