bridetobe2013, 4 August, 2011 at 14:23 Posted on Planning 0 21

I need some help please.......

although I dont get married until 2013 I can not find a venue I love!

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about Dunkenhalgh, Sparth House Hotel, Mitton Hall, Saddleworth Hotel, Shrigley Hall.

I know there is alot there but I am trying to gather info on a few different venues.

Help would be appreciated.

I live Manchester/Oldham Way

What time of year as some of these can be a bit remote if it snows?

Dunkenhalgh is nice hotel and the Bride I know had no complaints, have dressed the room there and it looks stunning because of all the windows

Shrigley hall is stunning, I haven't donea venue dressing there but i have been a couple of times to deliver cakes, it seems to get good feedback, I think they have some reasonable packages try looking at these also

Mottram Hall, lovely venue and stunning grounds and you can get married outside there, we do wedding open days there for them, the next one will be in October, but think they may hae a wedding fair before that

    Worsley Park Marriott

in fact any of the Marriotts they all offer good food and excellent service

TripAdvisor isn't entirely reliable just on reviews alone - you have to look at context. There's one hotel I know of that really is dreadful (it makes Fawlty Towers look like the Savoy) so there are plenty of scathing one star reviews, and loads of glowing five star reviews that are in many cases rehashes of the same old review, put on by someone or another that the hotel pays to try and counteract it. Most of the five star reviews are first time reviewers who never review anything again - so it's quite obvious when you look at it. Check also the posting history of the person reviewing, is it their first and only review, or have they reviewed loads of different places?

The money he wastes on paying someone to 'damage limitation' his reputation would be far better spent actually doing the place up...

However, in principle, sites like Tripadvisor do have their value, just don't take someone's word for one bad (or good) post amongst many.

Ooh you're very close to me! i work up the road from the dunk.

the list of venues we were going to look at was...sparth house, old mill hotel, the oaks (burnley), fence gate, stirk house hotel, bartle hall, mytton fold, gibbon bridge hotel and farrington lodge.

to be honest we went to look at stirk house first and booked it there and then so have no real idea of what any others are like!

go on http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/acs/sites/registration/marriages/locations.asp and this may help!

Have you tried Crow Hill at Huddersfield http://www.crowhillcottages.co.uk/weddingintro.htm

It's not far from Oldham, and is a lovely country house venue.

They put up a semi-permanent marquee in April for 6 months to hold the wedding reception.

Crow Hill itself sleeps about 12, the cottage 6 and the lodge 6 if you use the sofa bed in the sitting room.

Hey Green Hotel isn't too far away for guests and there is a lovely church in the village.

The venue itself is lovely but when I went to a wedding there they had to have a limiter on the music in the evening - not sure if this is important to you but thought I'd mention it.

If Crow Hill becomes a possibility for you, let me know and I'll give you any advice I have!

    Thanks Kharv.

A limiter could be an issue to be honest depending on how low!!

Where are you getting married? x

Shrigley Hall is lovely, we had our work christmas party there last year. Like someone else said depending on the time of year you're planning on you may want to consider the possibility of being snowed in! We all had to leave our christmas party reasonably early because it started snowing pretty heavy and the drive up to the hotel is quite steep and theres a few windy country lanes to navigate too. On the plus side it did look very pretty and (depending on how many guests you're having and their budget for accomodation) the macclesfield adlington travelodge is just down the road, if they didn't want to stay at shrigley.

We're having our reception at The Tytherington Club in Macclesfield and as far as i'm aware they're licensed for ceremonies too. But i'm guessing Macc might be a little bit too far for you?

    Claire x

Personally I thought it was too low but that's not to say they haven't relaxed the rules a bit since last October - I would certainly ask the question if you like the place.

I'm getting married at a place called Harlaxton Manor near Grantham.

Are you stuck with staying in that end of Lancashire?

If not, West Tower in Aughton...

I think that sounds like a lot to be honest.

My friend got married in an October - I know she didn't spend that much. She also only had 50 to the day and about 70 to the evening.

Another idea is field day hire http://www.fielddaysitehire.co.uk

They've got some interesting venues, with others coming on the site all the time.

or, Weddings and Wellies http://www.weddingsandwellies.co.uk , they are not far from Oldham
