Venue messing me around?

JenniferRFC, 4 January, 2013 at 16:39 Posted on Planning 0 7

So, I'll try to cut a long story short - I booked my venue on 03/08/12 for 03/08/13 even although it was not yet open. I took a chance as most of the other venues in my home town that had availability on this date had a maximum guest number of 100 and I need more than this.

They said at the time of the booking that it would be open in April 2013, when I called up in October they said it had been moved to May. In November I read an interview with the owner in the local paper saying it would be open in 'Summer 2013' so I called again and this time they said June. I was at home over Xmas (I no longer live in my home town) and several family members advised that progress has been slow at the site. I can sort of understand this as it is an old victorian building which is being fully refurbished into a 5 star boutique hotel.

The seeds of doubt were planted though so I called the general telephone line yesterday without mentioning my booking and asked if they knew an official opening date to which the man replied 'not sure yet but probably sometime in August'. I said that was surprising as I had booked the 3rd for a wedding and he started trying to backtrack saying my wedding would definately go ahead!! I demanded the Manager call me back but apparantly she is off until Monday!

I'm starting to really panic now as it was hard enough getting a venue 5 months ago and I can't really change the date as people have already booked flights etc. I'm so angry, it's not a cheap wedding package by any means so I really did expect a better service. At the time I booked, I was told June & July were fully booked out so I don't know what's happened to those brides to be!

I think I will just demand my deposit back and look elsewhere as I can't spend the next 7 months stressing over whether it will be open.

I would just to be on the safe side!! If they keep putting the date off they may not be that reliable! See if you can get a late deal on another venue Smiley smile

Sorry to hear about this as sounds very stressful for you. I think you may be wise to get your deposit back and look elsewhere. If you do decide to stick with them, make sure you have good wedding insurance!

What does it say in the contract you signed when you paid the deposit? Also, do you have wedding insurance?

Could you look in to other venues and then provisionally book another without having to put another deposit down for say 2 weeks? Then maybe have a serious conversation with the venue you've already booked and explain that as per their contract with you they are bound to provide you with the service you've paid a deposit for on the date agreed.

    Hi,

I think I know exactly which hotel you are talking about as we too were planning on having our wedding there (same weekend as you what a coincidence) but my parter was not happy booking somewhere that wasn't open yet so we changed our mind. I can totally understand why you are frustrated as from what I have heard they did cancel a few weddings due to not opening on time but that was a year or so ago so don't know how far along they are now. If I was you I would start looking around for somewhere as a back up just incase.

really hope the manager gets back to you and clears things up a bit x

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies. I've been so busy sorting everything out that I haven't had a chance to come back on!

The Manager called me (Mrs M - I think we are talking about the same place, in Stirling?) and admitted that they couldn't guarantee the opening date so they are refunding my deposit. Luckily I have found a fantastic venue in Edinburgh and I am so relieved. We have moved the date by 2 weeks but after contacting all the major participants and guests etc. it turns out this is not a problem for anyone. It means we are chopping some people off the guest list but they were distant relatives we were only inviting out of courtesy so I'm not going to lose too much sleep over that.

Disaster averted! Thanks for your advice guys x

We're going for The Balmoral on Princes Street in Edinburgh. The planners there have been superb and the reviews and pics I've seen from previous weddings there made my mind up. My package includes all my venue flowers (which I get to choose myself) and all sorts of extras so I've much less to do. So happy now!
